I've just seen a news flash in which it states:-"A murder investigation has been launched after the bodies of a woman and an eight-year-old girl were found at a house in Leeds, police said. They were discovered in Kirkby Avenue, Garforth. Officers also found a four-year-old girl with minor injuries. She was treated at Leeds General Infirmary and later discharged.A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder".

Aw this is shocking and somehow seems more real when its quite near. These type of murders are becoming almost an everyday thing. Is it a sign of the times? Life seems not to mean much to some .When I was a kid in the sixties people used to put their head in the gas oven. . now its common for all the family to be wiped out.Its so sad.

It would seem so:Homicides per million population in England and WalesYear Homicides1900 - 9.61910 - 8.11920 - 8.31930 - 7.51940 ..1950 - 7.91955 - 6.31960 - 6.21965 - 6.81970 - 8.11975 - 10.31980 - 12.51985 - 12.51990 - 13.11995 - 14.51997 - 14(Source:http://www.parliament.uk/documents/comm ... 99-111.pdf) Although are we now reporting crimes better as we care more about the population as a whole, whereas in the early 20th century the poor were less likely to have crimes against them added to the statistics? There are numerous ways to skew figures if needs be though!

Thank for the info. . so there ARE more homicides today! I remember as a kid my Mum watching News at Ten and it would say "there has been a murder in Kent" for example .Today the news is instant ,we get to know within an hour. Its so sad that there are a lot of husbands slaughtering their own families.

Thos figs stop in 1997, latest figs show that the rate is now less than that, so it's not all doom and gloom.http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/jan/2 ... -yearsAlso the definition was changed to homicide in the early 70's and the figures included mansalughter, infanticide and other crimes. More cases fall into these categories with changes in the law e.g. industrial 'accidents' have been potential manslaughter for some years now.So, clear as mud.
