I, along with many others, am "resting" at the moment and I looked at the Jobcentre website as I do daily. I did a general search for jobs within 15 miles of Leeds and noticed that there was only a handful for people actually making things, all the rest being admin. types. Isn't it sad that a city thay was built on manufacturing now hardly makes anything? Do we make anything here in any quantity....anyone know?

You're so right there - what's worrying is that the services are following manufacturing abroad. Where I work a lot of the IT is being off-shored when we could and should be training up people here.Where do we go from here unless a new "industrial" revolution is around the corner? If unemployment reaches Spain's levels of 20% then there will be riots in the streets.

In 1979, I remember a guy from South Africa saying that in twenty years time the uk will only be a service industry. He wasn't far wrong, was he! But so many jobs in IT and Call Centre's are now going to India, now mainly, if not entirely, because they will do the job for a fraction of the cost of UK charges.
Don't count the days; make the days count!

It's not just Leeds either, is it?I've long held the view that if we're selling nothing, as a country, then where is the money coming from to pay everybody? I will say, though, that quite a few companies have given up on contact centres in India and other places [although there are quite a few exceptions] because the workers there were struggling with our regional accents. I mean, even I have to translate Geordie when my mates come up! We need to make [or mine our natural resources, plenty of which are still left] stuff and we need to sell it.

I'm still reeling in shock from being told on Saturday night that the offices of a certain supermarket chain owned by WalMart make their admin staff buy their own stationary. There's not even much happening in admin, most of the stuff on the jobcentre website is agencies you never hear from again, any council recruitment still going on has gone over to apprenticeships, civil service and even the jobcentre (so i am told by the advisor there) are shedding posts, a lot of places only want a 'junior' as they don;t want to pay someone with experience or get someone experienced who will work for a junior wage but that will jump ship when something better comes along, even if they can;t guarentee the post itself will last long enough for that to happen. There's the odd interview to be had but it's tight and ludicrously competative

I was fortunate enough to spend two weeks in Canada this September. One evening, sat in a bar in Toronto and realised that having seen Canada that i now suddendly knew that our country is dying a long, slow ,lingering death. It may not be your cup of tea musically, but listen to the lyrics of this song,it says it all.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BBAw9oY9PAYouTube - Manic Street Preachers - All We Make Is Entertainment.wmv
