Specsavers is relatively new (it took over part of Argos), but there was another opticians called Contact Lens Services which was next to the shoe shop. At the top of King Charles St/the Headrow the predecessor to PC World was a rather grim looking "everything for a pound" shop called something like "It's Amaaazing", and a photo on Leodis from the 70s suggests that it was also Barkers TV & Musical Instruments at one point, but I'm not sure what it was in between. The arts & crafts shop wasn't Jowett & Sowry (which was on the Headrow and is now a closed coffee shop) so it would probably have been Dinsdales. I'm also pretty sure there have been various travel agents there. No idea what the megaphone might be about though.

Think you may be right, though I don't remember them being there all that time, and if they were put there in 2005, isn't this after some of these shops closed? There was from memory:A cafeBeatties Model shop (bankrupt)then Dinsdales then a travel store and the Contact Lens place, then there was some other quirky shop that sold odd things, but cant remember if that was after the travel shop or at the same time. Then there was Earnshaws shoes where Specsavers is nowAccording to Wikipedia about Beatties "On 14 March 2001 the company was placed into administration by its parent company ERA Group."Dinsdales seems to have moved to Headingly somewhere. So maybe they may know what the tiles are. I called the DLG place and they were't sure what they were but I have sent them an -email.What was on the other side of KCS, was there a barbers also, and another shop near where the loading bay used to be for the Headrow Centre?

I'm sure the "It's Amaaaaaazing" shop was once the AA (Automobile Association) shop, when they had such things.I can remember going in as a kid - they sold AA membership, travel books, maps, etc and you could also order a route plan to where you were going on holiday which was essentially a customised list of directions from your door to wherever you were going. I think members got these free or at a discounted price. Obviously in the days before sat nav!The RAC also had a shop, but that was on Regent Street.

The image (if it downloaded!) shows a metal cover on the pavement just to the left as you go into the Leeds Central Library at its Calverley Street entrance. I thought (hope!) it might be of interest. The wording is quite worn but can be made out. The top line states "The Yorkshire House To House". The badly worn middle line states "Electric Light" and the bottom line states "Electricity Co Ltd".Please accept my apologies if this cover has ever been mentioned before on SL. I did try some searching for it but did not find anything.I wonder when 'The Yorkshire House To House' company was in buisness?

The Yorkshire House To House grate in Headingley in Phil D's photo has more wording and is nowhere near as worn as that by the Leeds Central Library.

I know there's some Yorkshire House to House Electric Co manhole covers on Otley Rd on the pavement across the road from Alba Tyres, around here: http://goo.gl/maps/Y4jY (I used to live on Richmond Rd so I got to see them quite regularly)Another old sign I remember from around Kirkgate Market was a butchers that said "Pleased to meet you. Meat to please you". I think it was Mickey Finn and I think it was the building to the right of the green-framed door at http://goo.gl/maps/kT8e on the side nearest the market. This would have been in the early 1980s but I'm not sure when or what happened to the butchers
