I'm far too young but I knew an old guy who frequented the Rising Sun in its Melbourne days.He said 9 out of 10 regulars drank mild.I think this was the case in most pubs then and it was down to personal taste rather than any ad. campaign.Apparently bitter was for the big Misters...

I was going to post that the Palace had this sign, and the "Courtier" logo on the door. The Palace is an excellent pub, with a good selection of real ales. I read earlier someone was slagging off "Smooth" beer. I was in the Sycamore in Morley the other week - watching the RL Grand Final, they have handpumps on the bar but no real ale. I had successively "Smooth" Tetleys followed by "Smooth" John Smiths - I couldn't tell the difference. In the days when Smiths and Tetleys pale ales were both sold in pint bottles, you could tell the difference - they were similar but not the same.Anyone on here remember the Holbeck Ale Wine and Spirits Vaults - they were an off licence that sold draught Tetleys to carry out. Long gone now though

The word 'Lager' even means, literally, 'Stored' - i.e the opposite of 'Fresh'!Another one that always gets me is 'Smooth' beer! What were you expecting - 'Lumpy' ?????? Interestingly my mates ask for a pint of rough when thet go in the Prince of wales for an ordinary pint of John Smiths.Personally i would nt drink either. This might sound daft but i will go in a pub for real ale,if none available (only Tetleys Smooth etc etc)then i will go for a quality lager (im ambidexturous you know) like Stella,Kronenbourg,Staropramen or the best in my opinion,Budvar.Drinking Budweiser is like drinking pop.Carling etc is pants i have had occasion to have a laugh to myself when patrons enter a pub and say "Great stuff, ill have a Carling"It has been known for me to leave a drinking establishment with my thirst unquenched if there is only Carling and John Smiths on.

Hey Drapesy - I might have a new one for you mate, not sure yet bit will go and have a look while on holiday. It's the Black Rock in Wakefield city centre, to be honest I didn't even know it was there as it is semi hidden but as I passed it while working today I could have sworn it had the Melbourne courtier on the windows - the etched style as opposed to painted.Incidentally - I looked at the ones on the Beech in Armley the other day, they look like they have recently been repainted as they looked far too clean and bright to be of any sort of age.

You're a man after my own heart cnosni! I enjoy Real ale - quality continental lagers and even Belgian 'Specialities' like White Beer, Chimay, Duvel, Bush, Kriek and even Geuze (that last one's a really acquired taste!!)I too love Budvar - but one you haven't mentioned is Pilsner Urquell - that stuffs brilliant - especially in the big 660cc bottles!. Anchor steam beer is great too- even though its American!Another good one is Stella's 'Peeterman's' - which you sometimes see on draught The worst 'beer' in the world, for me, is Foster's.I grieves me to say this but the most bearable of the mass- market brand lagers is Carlsberg.
