The Oddfellows are a "not-for-profit friendly society" formed in 1810 as a mutually helpful club, in lieu of trade unions, welfare state etc. I suppose they're similar to The Lions, the Round Table, etc. We touched on this subject on the Skulls thread a while ago. I think a branch used to meet at the Crown and Fleece. The name comes from the fact that originally there were several different guilds (literally an odd assortment) which banded together. There are several pubs in the region named after them. There's an Oddfellows in Greengates, Shipley and Pudsey. They are still in existence and have their own website. www.oddfellows.co.ukPS More nice pics, Cardi.

The B.B.C one show went around Leeds tonight doing a feature on the old painted Ghost signs. Most of the well know ones were on, Even the guy who actually painted the Tetley sign near the Compton in 1965. It was compiled by a guy on flickr who runs the Ghost sign group called Sam Roberts. We all submit the pics and Geograpgh them nationwide. He's building up a pretty comprehensive list and data base of all the survivors.I guess Leeds was chosen for the programme because there's some good quality ones out there. The 'Larkspur' add at Drig was quoted as been 'one of the best in Yorkshire' The blog it's mentioned on is herehttp://www.ghostsigns.co.uk/blogThere should be a link to the One show were it was on there (but not yet available when i looked) Perhaps if anyone knows a link were we can watch the repeat again would be good. There's also a few vids compiled about the ghost signs in the U.K at the bottom of the blog too.

Thanks for that link Phill. I missed that on TV. Great to see the Larkspur sign on there, I pass that everyday on the way to work and it is getting in a bad way, compaired with your photo of it on Flickr. This harsh winter has taken it's toll on it unfortunatley. Those huge flaking areas shown on the program are fairley recent, it wasn't as bad as that last year. Another thing you have captured before it vanishes forever

Yes your right, some have deteriated badly in the few years i've photographed them. There full of character when there distressed, but they will go eventually. I think an effort to renovate and preserve the best examples should be made t.b.h.

If someone has time, there is one just been revealed on one of the side streets going down Roundhay Road. I think its one of the Lambtons and its ont he left as you travel into town. One of the shops at the end of the Terrace has the side window etched with a painter and decorators mar on it. Looks very old. It think it is Lambton Grove, or one of the next few, and its in the position in the photo attached though not necessairily this shop. Sorry I cant get down there to have a look but it looks like it might get covered back up soon.
