The Bowling Green in Otley is one of their poorer efforts Not sure I agree with you there Blakey, true the Bowling green was a very interesting place with its massive collection of bric-a-brac on every wall, window ledge and even the ceiling but the pub was small, cramped and in dire need of a good clean and re-decorate. It was also a real pain having to go out into the courtyard and use the cold, damp and smelly toilets in the converted stables.I went there just after it re-opened and found it very pleasant and roomy and I think the idea of covering the courtyard with a glass roof whilst still keeping the cobbles, effectivly bringing it in doors was a nice touch.Just my personal thoughts mate.

All I can say is The Black Bull in Pudsey a Weatherspoons pub is a joy to go in.I have never been what you can call a drinker but i do like to go for a meal has BLAKEY says value for money is very good. If Weatherspoons can take over a pub and keep it alive then i say good luck to them i hope they can do the same for many more it just goes to show if run on the right lines then there is still hope for many pubs to remain open.
No matter were i end my days im an Hunslet lad with Hunslet ways.

Oh yes Big N, I agree with everything you say about its condition before it closed and, interesting as all the "exhibits" were, it needed a real sorting out. A couple of us have been in three times since it reopened and I daresay my judgement has been clouded by sitting near the front door for a hot meal. The doorway used to have a porch but this has gone, and now every time anyone enters or leaves you are subjected to a howling cold gale in bad weather. I'm sure this bad feature could be easily rectified by protecting the entrance in many possible ways, and then I might well improve my views. Also, I suppose some of us might hold a bit of a grudge because we begged Wetherspoons to theme the pub (as they have often done with others) to reflect its importance as being opposite the Town's famous bus company formerly right across the road. We offered as much displayable memorabilia as they might have wanted, and suggested names like "The Omnibus" or the "Samuel Ledgard" etc. There were promising replies but admittedly no commitment. Some theme based on Otley's printing and engineering history would alternatively have been grand too - but there we are, better plead guilty to a bit of sour grapes I suppose.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

We also know that it hasn't always been a pub, too.

They did a Pudsey theme at the Black Bull sorry its now The Crossed Shuttle the name comes from the coat of arms of Pudsey. They have photographs of famous local people eg Len Hutton for instance with lnformation about him. I spend time looking at the photographs when I should be sitting at the table with my wife but then local history is my thing.

The Ring O' Bells in Otley is currently undergoing major surgery, and has new signage which reads, "The Otley Tavern..."

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.
