On the Pudsey loop line or the line thats still in use Mike? There isn't one on the loop line.. There is a disused tunnel as you enter Bradford interchange that used to run to Halifax.

I got the book today! Someone I know used to live along the lines. The tunnel is between Queensbury and Holmfield and is meant to be 1 mile 741 yrds long.I asume this tunnel being discussed here is the clayton/queensbury one?The book is post-closure, and was published in 1984...The map says that there is four big tunnels,Holmfeild -> pellonQueensbury -> HolmfeildIngrow -> CullingworthDenholme -> ThorntonThe chap I know cmains that the big tunnel from QB-Holmfeild is still accessable (although not at all easily).

Jf. I used to live in the Albion pub and was desperately trying to think of where you meant. But when I saw your pic of the wall on the canal with the blue railings on I recognised it straight away!! Before the new developments I used to walk my dog there. As the pub backs onto that land it was, in essence, my back yard  I always assumed that those inlets, both there and further up the canal were narrow boat landings of some description, I never realised they were conected with the railway. My dad can't remember those rails, so when exactly, or near as dammit, were they got rid of, do you know? This site is brilliant, I really wish I had the knowledge to be able to contribute more!! Thanks all

I remeber the Greenside tunnels as a young girl in the mid 70's. The area near smalewell Road was known locally as Happy Valley and as a young child we would dare each other to walk through the tunnel to the Carlisle Rd end. Does anybody remember these tunnels being referred to as the treacle mines of Pudsey. I remember when I was approx 9 years old being taken there on a sunday school trip from Pudsey Parish Church. Approximately 25ft into the entrance of the tunnel was a man (treacle miner) sat on a stool handing out spoons full of treacle to the children. I believed he was real for many years. I am sure Calendar news filmed the event.

Rocking Gal, Growing up in Bramley we had family in Pudsey and used to visit frequently. I remember my mum always talking about the pudsey treacle mines ( she also used to say that the pigeons flew backwards to stop the muck getting their eyes in Pudsey :lol. I never knew where she was talking about though, she probably didn't either, just recounting folklore!!

I'm not really sure which tunnel this is Mike. Between Holmfield & Queensbury is deffinately Queensbury but thats not accesible all the way through.. The nearest is Clayton. Thats only a one ended tunnel just over a 1000yds.. Have a look at my pics.. There's links to relevant sites over the 'Alpine line' I'm dying to have a look at Lees moor tunnel near Kieghley.. Nicknamed the HELLHOLE :-)

Hmm the Lee's Moor tunnel between Cullingworth and Ingrow? Is it still open? Its quite long isn't it, says here its 1533 Yrds...Mike*Edit: I'm trying to looka t those photos but I got caught up in the underground Leeds bit. Is it worth a look? Seems reasonably easy apart from the odd spot of quicksand... how deep did the water get for you? Have to plan it on a day without any chance of flash-floods i supose...Clayton looks quite nice...

No it's deffinately not easy Mike.. It was very hard work to be honest, Hardest i've done. We ended up spending more time wading in the channel as you need to climb in & out.. very slippy too. There's the added danger of water.. I very nearly turned back early on due to a real loud gush of water in one of the tunnels. The deepest bit was about 1' high & thats when it hadn't rained for weeks.

Hi,Just discovered this thread while searching for more info on the Greenside loop line. Im trying to gather as much research as I can with a view to modelling the line as freeware for the EA Rail Simulator PC game when that gets released. Im just getting started at the moment - havent even had the time to go and look for myself yet! Doesnt sound like there will be much left to see though Fantastic photos - would there be any objections to my using them as a reference for the model (credit and copyright obviously respected)?I noticed talk about a book about the line. Can anyone tell me what this is called and maybe its author and ISBN number?Any ideas if blueprints for structures along the line have been archived anywhere? Thanks for any help,Stu

Hi Stu. There used to be a bit about the loop on lost rails but the site hasn't been on line for a while now. I haven't seen all that much in detail myself. It's just a case of googling away & finding the odds & sods like this piece. If you want some detail cutting & tunnel pics then you can use these on here for reference & there's some more stuff here you can view the large sizehttp://flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/sets/72157600155996303/detail/I hope they help you & thanks for asking for permision. Good luck mate :-)
