The conductor didn't press hard on the ticket release mechanism, there was a button on the front of the machine and if you pressed the button and operated the lever to issue the ticket, then 2 tickets would be spat out of the machine. Interestingly, the top ticket would have the stage number printed on it, the lower ticket would have dashes in the stage number location.....

You had better tell WYPTE (Metro) then, as Leeds City Bus Station and Wakefield Bus Station to name but two require Bus's to reverse from the stands. Indeed I would imagine most large WY Bus stations are built to similar models.

Their only advantage is a pleasant and secure and comfortable concourse - after that they are fraught with danger. When I worked for South Yorkshire/ Arriva we had to depart from stands 5 and 6 in Leeds and your heart was in your mouth on every trip. Due to the extreme curve of the inward approach road at that end of the station you simply could not guarantee to see buses arriving at well over the safe speed - and as for "give way to reversing buses" how long is a piece of string ?? - at what point do you decide to stop reversing while a "speeder" comes in ignoring you, or do you carry on and "bang" - its happened often. The worst incident ever was recently and was tragic - an elderly chap allighted from a "First" bus and wandered around near the back wheels, being run over and horribly killed. This was a nearly new single doorway bus - Metro's incredible reaction ?? - no more dual doorway buses in the station - talking about dodging the issue !! "First" seemingly gave in without a whimper and sent the dual doorway buses, middle aged but excellent vehicles, to be expensively rebuilt to eliminate the centre exit. This has infuriated me ever since the tragedy occurred. The other perfectly obvious danger with these stations is that the waiting passengers are like sitting ducks behind metal barriers and acres of glass - more than one vehicle has "overshot" while landing and damaged the station - and it can be a very genuine accident caused by a foot slipping from the brake for a second, or by grease on the roadway.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

OK! busses reverse in the bus stations with passengers onboard so maybe i should have stated no allowed to reverse in the street by law! But i agree on the points about safety in bus stations! btw does anyone know why 'First' don't run a service from Leeds to Castleford or Pontefract?

Someone should tell "Cornwall Greyhound" then, I've just come back from Cornwall, and the bus from Porth to Padstow (13 miles) took 1hour 45 minutes - largely because it was a double decker and had to go down lanes only just wide enough to accomodate it, consequently every time it met a car coming the other way, either the bus or the car had to reverse.
