Although I know a few people involved in the book, I can't confirm or deny the charity cash rumour. However what I can confirm is that a lad who's loosely affiliated with the Leeds football scene (as someone said , the Service Crew name was/is more of a press label than a name commonly used), works with a West Leeds charity for people with learning disabilities. About 18 months ago, via one of the internet forums which the press would say is frequented by hooligans, a group of like minded Leeds lads decided to hold a charity indie night at a pub in North Leeds, with all proceeds going to the charity in order to pay for a holiday for the residents. It was no secret and was widely publicised on numerous football internet forums. On the afternoon of the event, West Yorkshire police visited the premises and told the licencee that the event was a football hooligan get together which would result in violence and that he risked his licence if he let it go ahead. It was cancelled. At short notice, a new venue was found and people were hastily alerted by text. A number of us managed to get there but the attendance was reduced massively resulting in obvious loss of cash to the charity. In addition to the entrance fee, the 'hooligans' had a whip round, raffle etc and managed to raise enough for the holiday, despite the efforts of the authorities.Leeds fans certainly werent angels in the 80's but most of those crazy young lads are now family men in their 40's with responsible jobs, who dislike chavs and criminals as much as the next person. Unfortunately, mud sticks and as the above events show, some people are unwilling to forgive and forget.

Leeds Utd. Seem to have been unfairly branded. One of my work colleagues always refers to them as "dirty Leeds". So who does he support then? Liverpool, some of whose fans caused one of the biggest tragedies in football (Heysel). Ironic or what?I used to go to Headingley back then, but my younger brother used to go to Elland Road and the only violence he experienced was on one occasion when a copper punched him completely at random and for no reason whatsoever. My brother was only 16 at the time. The thing he remembers most is the look of shock on a nearby WPC's face.
