My flickr pictures are herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/Because lunacy was the influence for an album. It goes without saying that an album about lunacy will breed a lunatics obsessions with an album - The Dark side of the moon!

"The new mobile library and IT truck will remain at Compton Road while the major redevelopment of the library building as part of the creation of a new ‘Joint-Service Centre' for Harehills takes place. The new centre will provide a range of health and council services all under one roof, with an extended and improved library offering an enhanced range of facilities. The new centre is to be funded by Leeds City Council and NHS Leeds and is due to open in late 2010. ""The proposed site for the JSC is on Compton Road and willinclude the redevelopment of the existing library. As with thecentre in Chapeltown, the new JSC will improve the visualappearance of the local area and help regenerate this busycorner of Harehills Lane.Services currently planned to be in the JSC include:Harehills Library (to replace the existing Library on site)Leeds City Credit UnionLeeds City Council Customer ServicesAccess to mental health and drug treatment services provided byLeeds PCT (for the local population)"http://www.communityventuresltd.co.uk/i ... flet.pdf"A groundbreaking £20m plan to build two new state-of-the-art health and council service centres in Leeds has been given the go-ahead.The two new ‘Joint-Service Centres’ in Harehills and Chapeltown are among the first of their kind in the city and will transform access to local services by providing a range of health and council services for local people in modern facilities and all under one roof. The centres will be provided by Community Ventures Leeds Limited, a public private partnership joint venture company jointly funded by Leeds City Council and NHS Leeds. They will contribute to the regeneration of these inner-city areas to improve the services on offer locally and help address the health needs of local people. Both centres will have great new libraries and customer services points for council services. They will also provide banking facilities through the Leeds Credit Union and in Chapeltown residents will be able to access a range of health services, including dentistry, and a new pharmacy. " http://www.leeds.gov.uk/page.aspx?pagei ... d=3192"The facility is a joint project between Leeds City Council and Leeds Primary care Trust to provide health, social care and a range of Council services in one building. A Joint Service Centre is a modern, multi-agency (predominantly public service organizations) facility whereby local residents can easily access a range of face-to-face services from across organizations which form part of a “chain of care”, or are complementary to ensuring that people experiencing disadvantage and / or having complex needs can receive services in an appropriate and timely manner. It should be pleasant and welcoming and form a “hub” for the whole community."http://www.karroninternet.com/SiteDirec ... 6FB26%7DSo perhaps we all put the spewling about inclusion, exclusion etc to bed and cope with the facts and every one will have somewhere to get their joints serviced.

Indeed Cardi; the discussion has of course developed from the hypothesese which were suggested and it quickly became apparant that it was right not to draw too many conclusions from the assumptions, when the refurbishment notice was first mentioned.Interesting to see that it going to be such a diverse complex, hope they've considered those who will traval to this very crowded and busy area by car!

biggee99 wrote: One more photo for you guys to look at this one is quite big held a lot of people in its time and still as good as the day it was made, its at the back of the stanley road tip not far from the one at back of the library gardens that will be lost soon for us i wonder if we will be aloud to go in and get all the fringe benefits????? This is another public air raid shelter built close to a cinema- in this case the Weston which fronted on Florence St and backed onto the Stanley Rd destructors site as I well remember. I was in the cinema one saturday afternoon in the late 50's for the kids show ( ABC Minors?) when we had to be evacuated because someone had lit a fire against the back wall of the cinema, in the destructors yard. The cinema wall was covered in bitumen, so the entire wall was ablaze - lots of black smoke and fire engines. The fire was rumoured to have been started by 2 or 3 lads, who almost succeded where the Luftwaffe had failed.
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

I remember being a member of Compton Road Library as a child. I used to go on a Saturday with my parents to get books, but, I think, the best thing was when we got taken from school. I went to St Augustines Primary School & we would be taken to the library from school. We would have to walk 'two by two' with a teacher in front & a teacher behind. We would go up the street from school along the street at the top, which used to have factories, & then walk round to the library. The best bit I remember though was when we came back, we were all given 2p (YES 2P) to spend in the sweet shop on the way back & I seem to remember you could get lots & lots & lots of sweets with 2p in those days.....!!!!!!
