there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

I do love a happy ending.Meanwhile, we can continue speculating upon the wording on the flag and the message in the window of the pub and why there were sickles carved over the windows. Sickles which have gone the way of all flesh, sadly, since SL was not around to raise hell when they were removed. [/skullsrant]

[/skullsrant] I think it says "CROOKED BILLET" on the left -hand window and "SMOKE ROOM" on the right. I dont think the 'sickles' are of any significance - just ornamentation that happen to look a bit like sickles.

Drapeseys identification of the pub as "The crooked billet" enables us to guess why this group are featured.Across the road from the pub is the war memorial to Stourton?Thwaite gate lads killed in both World Wars. I am getting this was taken either at the adding of new names after WW2 or at a Remembrance Sunday celebration.this would explain the medals.
Steve JonesI don't know everything, I just like to give that impression!

You could be right.PS The name "Crooked Billet," although appropriate to the old soldiers in the photo, must be a unique pub name. Where does it come from?

Having looked at an old map, I saw that the pub was very close to the Hunslet Forge, so I guess billet doesn't refer to a place to stay, but a billet of iron/steel. Crooked, presumably, because it's a flawed casting?
