My dad's tales about Charlie Peace were (I now know) largely fictional. I got the impression from him that Peace escaped on the train and was at large for a long time afterwards, and on one occasion actually took part in a manhunt for him, thereby deceiving the searching police by mingling with them. It is interesting that even in the late 1940s/early 1950s there was still a lot of public interest in him.
