THINGS YOU DON'T SEE ANYMORE (Part 2)

When I was a young lad (mid-to-late 1960s) we used to go on holiday to Bridlington or Colwyn Bay in North Wales. I can't remember where these events used to happen, but I suspect it may have been at all the coastal resorts during the summer.On the beach there would be a cordoned off area filled with little paper flags on sticks. Lots of children would line up behind a start line. It may have been the case that you bought a ticket at the event, but I have a vague memory that you had to present a voucher cut out of the local newspaper the night before (johnny39, perhaps you could shed some light?). Anyway, on a signal, all the children would race across the course and grab a flag as they went, which would be subsequently exchanged for a 'prize', invariably a cheap toy of some description.I think these were called Treasure Hunts, but I'd be interested to know if anyone else remembers doing this or can add any detail about these events?

I Don't think the treasure hunts were in Brid as I used to spend nearly all the summer holidays there in the 60's as my best mate's Gran lived there

Sorry Bruno I don't recall the "Flag Race". I can only just recall "Lobby Lud", it wouldn't be long after the end of the war when I can remember him on the go - no not the First one I might add . Sorry I can't be of any more help.

I remember the Lobby Ludd promotion in seaside resorts around 1957-59. They used to publicise which resorts he would visit on a particular day and blitz that resort with advertising. On one occasion I recall an aeroplane towing a banner ad for Lobby Ludd flying up and down a crowded summer beach somewhere on the South Coast. Did he exist or was it just a scam I wonder?

he Lobby Ludd newspaper promotion certainly used to happen in Blackpool at August bank holiday where if he was correctly identified he paid out a £5 my Mother said some men stopped wearing trilby hats around that time as that was his trademark and they were fed up of being accosted. when we were on holiday in Blackpool my brother and I were more interested in "Billys "Weekly Liar", a four page paper costing an old penny and told ridiculous but funny stories and carried banner headlines like "Unconscious Skeleton found dead on Beach"
"Girl explodes in Fathers Wellingtons" ( I wonder if the Goons ever read this paper.
