jim wrote: There is another interesting rail bridge shown on the map you show Phill. "Castleton Bridge" (lower left hand corner) over the Harrogate line served the Leeds Forge Company via a long siding which left the Bradford/Carlisle line goods yard heading NW by Canal Road. The line turned through a full semi-circle climbing steeply, and, crossing this bridge, ended up facing in the opposite direction as it traversed the works yard. I believe the remains of the abutments are still in place. Here is the pic I tried [and failed] to post the other day.Jim's post struck a chord with me as, earlier in the week, I had been looking at some old maps of Cardiff Bay and the whole place was covered in railway. I know that Leeds has lost of lost railway but I've never paid much attention to them so I thought I'd give this a punt.I've highlighted the removed track in red and I attempted to do the existing track in green but the Leeds / Bradford line where it passed through the station has proved to be impossible, the track having been very much altered and re-aligned.

As Mhoulden says the bridge at the end of Washington Street is a pipe bridge and carries sewage pipes from the factories etc across the other side of the canal ( at least thats where I guess they come from ).I used to work as a driver for a company called I.H. packaging based at the river end of Washington street around 15 years ago and we suffered several weeks of disruption while the sewer along Washington St to Kirkstall Rd was repaired / replaced.

(Click the photo for the full size) I've done a comparison view of the steps leading down from Viaduct Road to the bridge across the river. The 1970's shot shows what an impressive structure it is. There is some nice arched brickwork forming the steps. It's quiet incredible to see how overgrown it is and what little of the structure is visible today.Top photo courtesy and copyright Eric Miles.

The 1890 map is very detailed. It even has the old broken gas lamp marked that can be seen on the 1970's photo above.
