Most people think it is Armley Road, but the old Armley Road is to the right of the railway, swinging across it on the bridge in the far background behind the impressive signal gantry, just past the Albion pub. The first section of the main road is still officially Canal Street I think we were on the case at the same time Jim

Excellent and enjoyable photos - thank you very much! I remember being taken by my big brother to go train spotting at Central when I was 6 or 7 .... all I remember is that it seemed very dark with a distinctive smell ... but it started my life long passion for railways!

I have some photos up on the surviving Central viaduct herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/sets/7 ... detail/The old semaphore signal must be a pretty rare example to survive in this day and age.

Unless they have been moved in the last month or so there were some semaphore signals at the Knaresborough end of Harrogate Station.

There are plenty of working semaphore signals in Cornwall - many of them on the main line. They are beautifully maintained and painted, and all have their original GWR ball and spike finials.

Still very much in evidence in Great Yarmouth too on the run in along Breydon Water (or sometimes - under Breydon Water!).

They are still there,i thought digger was on about old disused ones. There are still plenty of examples of working semaphore signals on Network Rail lines, plenty on Gainsborough Trent Junction to Saxilby. Also some around Seamer i think.

Yes it was badly worded by me I think I meant there can't be many of these old wooden type signals from the steam era still knocking about.    Like this onehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/276347 ... 234265061/(for some reason I can't get that image to display on S.L today)

[quotenick="Phill_dvsnHere's a good idea of the track layout where trains into Central, and City diverged. The DMU is running into Central along the curve Jim mentions, It is quite a steep climb as well. As Jim rightly states that part of the viaduct still survives today. The tracks to the left of the DMU run into the low level goods area at the back of the roundhouse, and around the Wellington Road area. Tracks into City station are nearest the cameraman. Jim will be able to fill in the details better here, but no doubt this is where trains would switch from the Central lines on the right, to the City station bound lines directly below the photographer. This shot is Wortley Jnct and the area today has changed beyond recognition.
