North Street - Sheepscar - Pictures

The final part of North Street is just visible to the right of the bank in the old photo, but mostly hidden by the bus. Some of the old premises there have been derelict looking for some. I recently noticed that work was going on at some of them so I went there on August 12 2013 hoping that I might be allowed to look inside, but no work was going on then! I have put a photo I took that day, which has an old North Street sign just visible on the far right of the row. I suspect that many may not realise that the short length of road immediately in front of the premises is part of North Street.

Or that the last bit of "North Street" on the other side is actually still Meanwood Road, you can the sign on left of the door of the old bank. Never realised about the scary face either. Will never be able to look at it in the same way now.

It may look a bit tatty but I think the old North Street was more "user friendly". It is on a more human scale than the bleak expanse of road that is now there. I suppose that goes for a lot of areas though where they've knocked down the old buildings and put up cheapo looking industrial units ( you know, the ones with a few layers of bricks and then steel sheets making up the height). Areas like Hunslet Road or Holbeck for example.

bit more 'civil' back then, leading nicely into Vicar Lane, thence the Grand Arcade en route to Lewis's.....

Good one there Jogon...grumpybloke - totally agree with you from a visual perspective, though without the road widening I would hate to me making my way north of the city of an evening. Would take hourrrrrsssssss.

13th July 1867. The toll house and bar at the junction of North Street and Roundhay Road. This stood on the edge of Sheepscar green. The toll bar was a pentagonal building which was demolished to make way for the Fire Station, Police Station and Post Office built in 1872. Sheepscar branch library was later built on this site and these premises are now used by West Yorkshire Archives Service. The Post Office closed in 1985 and is now used as premises for the Ramgarhia Board

That's a great photo Jogon. Interestingly (well it is to me ) that it was only 99 years before England won the World Cup.

Pretty sure there was also a police station on this site at one point also, next to the branch library. Can't seem to find pics but it is noted on a map somewhere...
