His books are set in Yorkshire but he has lived in Canada for about 35 years.Biographical notes see: http://archive.thisisyork.co.uk/2003/10 ... banks.com/

It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

Happy 2010 all! I posted here a couple of years ago, but can't remember where, what my nickname was or any other relevant info - I'll pretend I'm new... Great site, and there are worse days to have huge nostalgia attacks. RL:Jimmy Lowes was a Miggy lad, went to Middleton Park High, as did Wayne McDonald.Garry Schofield was at Parkside (so was Paul Madeley. Not bad for a pretty average school!)Someone said Jason Robinson was at Cross Green - my cousin swears he was at Matthew Murray (was called Jason Brannan then).Moving north, I'm pretty sure Ellery Hanley went to Foxwood, unless I'm having a senior moment brainfade. He used to hang out with a tough crowd. Can anyyone confirm that? Not RL:Angela Griffin (Fiona Middleton on Corrie waybackwhen, amongst others) is from Beeston, went to Hugh Gaitskell Primary (as did I when it was HG Middle).I wish all Miggy lasses had looked like Nell Mac when I grew up there!

I have read through the thread and would like to add,Jack Higgins author, real name Harry Patterson, taught at Leeds Poly and I think went to Roundhay school as a lad. Is he a true loiner? Also I remember my elder brother talking of a group formed at Leeds Uni when he was there i.e. mid sixties, group named Procul Harum. Does anyone know if they are from Leeds?Captain Oates of the polar expeditions of Robert Falcon Scott apparently lived in a large house that stood in what is now Meanwood Park. Was he a loiner?Jimmy Moran who was a professional wrestler, stage name Gargantua.Charlie Peace, was he not a loiner?

Was talking today with a friend of my next door neighbour i bumped into on the bus into town, i forget why he brought it up but he mentioned seeing Woodbine Liz around Leeds. He's 89 now and said it happened when he was 15, he said it was not long after he joined the navy, and he'd never heard language like she used, when he told her he didn;t smoke!Guess that would make it around 1936!
