Defend himself? Or frighten newspapers from exposing him and going to print with threats of libel? There is a difference.

Sure is, Phill. My cousins auntie lived next door to JS and she was telling me some time back (my cousin) what a lovely guy JS was and how he'd park his car in the street and call the kids over, "His car was always full of bags of sweets". This would've been in the 60's. He was photographed outside the childrens home in Jersey with Wilfred Bramble and his own nephew also speaks out against him.The way he paws C. Nolan on Top of the Pops......Enough.

It certainly grim for Jim now. Public opinion is gathering momentum and the body of evidence is increasing exponentially. It might be, in the short term, that some other celebrities with similar closet skeletons could deflect some interest but the memory of this particular "Leeds' Own Son" is looking bleak indeed. Newspaper presses are very difficult to stop once they start rolling.

I'm genuinely saddened by the whole affair. Saddened that someone who appeared to be a local hero and did so much for so many good causes might turn out to have had a streak of pure evil running though him.Saddened that so many apparent victims suffered in silence for so long.Saddened that those in a position to do something about it appear to have looked the other way, or done nothing, for fear of it affecting their own careers. Make no mistake many of those coming forward now with their "concerns" were big enough stars in their day to have carried some real weight, no matter how obscure they may seem now.Saddened that any opportunity to put the whole matter before a court and establish the truth has been lost forever. No doubt there will be investigations, enquiries, committees and panels, much hand wringing and the inevitable pious "lessons will be learned", but that doesn't seem to help anyone here does it?

Nolan on Top of the Pops...... Hi Caron, in this day and age there are so many news stories, murders, children going missing like the young lass now in Wales. We sometimes become a little immune to it at times, But every now and again there is a story that seems to catch your attention more than others, and this whole Savile thing is one of them.I think it's the fact we all grew up seeing him on T.V, we have rose tinted glasses about the good old days when we were younger, there is also the fact that when some kindly old gent you'd least suspect of any wrong doing, is accused of wrong doing, then it seems to add to the intrigue and repulsion. There is something about a trusted figure, being anything but trustworthy. As children, Jimmy Savile was our weekly Saturday tea time Santa Claus, he was sat there on his big arm chair making kids dreams come true. I now get the feeling that we were all conned in a massive spectacular way, we were very blinkered to what we saw, as you say the clues were there all the time. Infact Savile didn't try to hide it, he bragged about it throughout his life. If you read his 1974 autobiography, or watch the documentary ''When Louis Met...Jimmy''http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM08U54gAJQYou can see for yourself. He was all over the girls on top of the pops, you could see them feel uneasy, it felt embarrassing, and as you say he was all over Coleen Nolan when she was only 14. He was grabbing these 'lovely young ladies' in front of our eyes every week.I always felt Jimmy Savile to be a bit creepy too, there was something wrong about seeing him in open vests and shorts like he wore, although I found him creepy, and not quite right. There was still something acceptable about him with all ages, from young kids, to your granny. He was odd, but harmless, so we thought. He wasn't really that great an entertainer if you look back over his career, he was quite robotic in a way. You got the same thing week in, and week out.If you edited out all his 'now then, now then's, hows about that then, goodness gracious, and guys n gals catchphrases out of his shows. You'd be luck to stitch together 4 minutes of unique film over a career that spanned 4 decades, but still we watched him.People say it's such a shame that a man who did so much for charity, now has to have his name tarnished in this way. It's the good work he did for charity is part of the reason many people find it hard to believe the accusations against him. I now feel his charity work was the biggest con of the lot, there is no denying he was tireless in his efforts for charity raising millions along the way, even at a ripe old age. I commend his spirit and determination. I however do not commend the reasons he did it for.He didn't have any great compassion or empathy for the people he was helping, he gave the impression that he did, but that's all it was-a public impression.Jimmy Savile was a self confessed attention seeker, always needing to be in the limelight, he revelled in it. Jimmy Saville was a Narcissist in short. No one could say they ever knew Jimmy Savile, they may have known him for 40 years, but no one could say they actually knew who the man was. He was notoriously evasive, showed no emotion, and was seen by many as a man with no feelings. He says himself on the documentary ''When Louis Met...Jimmy'' that he had no feelings. And those are classic signs of an attention seeking Narcissist. Narcissists aren't real people, they are empty inside, they put on whatever face they want to be, or the face that will get them what they want. They are the human equivalent of a Chameleon. Jimmy Savile found the loud and brash face of being a D.J in the 1960's got him noticed and brought attention to him, he stuck to that face and formula ever since. You only have to watch the documentary to see the way he lived, and how much he went out of his way for attention. It got him where he wanted to be, he rubbed shoulders with royalty, stayed with Margaret Thatcher for Christmas, and he even met the pope. He became 'His Royal Highness Sir James saint Savile O.B.E' He owned several cars, including a Rolls Royce, he was rolling in money, yet he insisted on using the train to Doncaster to cart a 6' tall teddy bear to Doncaster to have it auctioned for charity. There was easier ways for a man of his standing to have that giant Teddy bear delivered. But he wanted to be seen by the general public as the 'great and kind Jimmy Savile' once again doing his charity work. The man was loaded, but if anyone saw his flat you wouldn't have thought so. I'll post a few photos below of it. If you took away all his pop memorabilia and clothes, you'd have no idea anyone famous lived there. His flat was very shabby, almost like you'd expect to find some old spinsters house that time forgot, the 1970's bathroom suite and wood panelling that made it look more like a dodgy massage parlour.Yet in public he was all gold bling, only the biggest cigars, and photographed with his Rolls Royce. The very public face of Jimmy Savile.A 1960's time warp with furniture you couldn't give to Oxfam. The carpet looks more at home in the Mucky Duck circa 1985. raveydavey wrote: I'm genuinely saddened by the whole affair. Saddened that someone who appeared to be a local hero and did so much for so many good causes might turn out to have had a streak of pure evil running though him. Like Raveydavey says, I too am saddened how this has all ended. Jimmy Savile should have been one of Leeds great sons, and remembered for all the good work he did. They're will be a big investigation over this, the man himself may be dead, but the truth will out. And there are many people still alive who will be brought to account over what has emerged. I'm sure the people who still have any doubts about these allegations, they will have no doubts at all this time next year. It's very sad that Jimmy Saviles memory and legacy he leaves behind is just like his empty flat. An empty man who nobody really knew, lonely, sad, tacky, and very grubby indeed! We were all conned!Jimmy Savile. It was good while it lasted 1926-2011.

quote Phil "we were all conned"My dear old dad hated him with a passion, and he was a mild mannered man.I asked him why and his response was I'm not talking about it its too disgusting, but you'll find out when he's dead. Dads been dead 9 years how right he was, but I think there's more to come out which doesn't involve children. One of my dads best mates was a mortuary technician at LGI. Its really sad.

Yes I've been reading about that as well Geoff. No doubt there will be lots of lurid tales to come out, some will be true, others not. I only believe things from credible sources. But at least those people involved wouldn't have been able to complain later would they?
