Must be hell of a hard drive! And what if the terrorists speak in code? And what about texts and e-mails? And radios? If they start using the post, that's zillions of dollars worth of hi-tech equipment down the drain. Menwith Hill was built to listen to Russian military radio traffic. Oh, and the golf balls aren't there so you can't tell if the dishes are pointing at your house. They keep the weather off.

Not just memwith hill, there is also the GHCQ who have an outpost in this area, its by the old racecourse at Scarborough and various other places. All text and electronic traffic is monitored.I think it was only in the late 80's or very early 90's that the us government officially acknoledged the existance of the NSA.There was a court case in the states about some workers at a gov site that had contracted various ailments due to the handing of unspecified chemicals. It had to be thrown out as the government refused to acknowledge the existance of the site, even tho there was satelite imagry from both us and russian satelites that clearly shows this place is there. The problem is how they deal with the information, look at the london bombings, one dept had info about this being planned but had forgot to pass it onto other depts. This is now in public records.

Is it just me, but isn't the one at Westerly Croft supposedly looking at Ledgard way a bit useless as it seem to be permanently pointing skywards. Thwaite Gate definitely pans the junction but I am not sure any others move.

GCHQ do have the ability to listen to any telephone converstaion (landline or mobile) or read any email sent in the UK. However, they only do so with ceretain people who are known or if a certain criteria is met. Once it is met, the brief is to watch and see what or why this criteria is being kept to. They then pass on any real damning evidence to the security forces / police to deal with as they see fit.

What I was pointing out is that the potential is there should it be needed. The reason people get "bothered" about this is cos of the way it is introduced. The argument of watching us to protect us is as old as the hills. If you say this enough you eventually find yourself in a situation where you are even monitored at home. I'm not advocating that this is what is happening, but the more you hear the argument "I'm not doing owt wrong so I don't mind" the more eroded your civil rights will become. FACT! What about that poor chap Peck, who tried, unsuccessfully to comit suicide. His actions were caught on CCTv and THEN broadcast publicly over the internet???? OK, the co involved had to pay him a shed load of cash for thier actions, but imagine a highly personal situation you find yourself in and then all seeing it!!This bit care of the independant newspaper:It is because individuals should never cede too much power to the state that we should remain vigilant when new powers are sought against terrorism, or when the populist cry goes up to take fingerprints, DNA samples or iris patterns from everyone. It is a fundamental protection of liberty that information collected for one purpose should not be used for another - except for the prevention or detection of serious crime. So far, that principle has held through the silent revolution. It must continue to do so.
