On the corner of South Queen Street and Townend. It was originally a theatre, and up to its conversion to a Bingo hall in the seventies was used as such a couple of times a year by local am-dram societies.Ernie Wise appeared there, and I believe his statue which is due to be unveiled this month will be sited somewhere in its vicinity. The other Morley cinema was the "Picture House" on Queen Street which closed in the early sixties (last film "The Blob" I believe) to become a Coopers and then a Fine Fare Supermarket.

Thanks Trojan, most interesting and that is the building I was thinking of - I had no idea that it had ever been a "live" theatre. Many people are also unaware that the Shaftsbury Cinema in York Road was a fully fledged theatre when built.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

As regards the Picture House in Morley, the Leeds bound bus stop for the 52/53 was almost opposite. The buses would sometimes wait there, the conductor sitting on the bonnet talking to the driver - presumably for warmth.

I was quite surprised to find out a few years back that the mock tudor frontage building next to the engineering works(?) behind the conservative club in Kirkstall used to be a cinema. The frontage (if nothing else) was still there when i moved down this way in 92, though it seems to have been demolished at some point early 2000s.
Evil and ambition scatter in the the darkness, leaving behind dubious rumors to fly in public. To the next world, I commit thee.

Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

That was the cosy Haddon Hall cinema - no booze, you needed the other "Haddon Hall" a few streets away for that !!
