Those pics I took in March which is scary as I'd have guessed at them being about 6 weeks old - not 3 months!

I'd agree. Still the woods to change very little...I still know them like the back of my hand. Hardly changed in 10 years when I first started to go walking with the parents in the area!Great they are!

If the firework explosion was 19 june 1957 (Inquirers post) it is the 50th anniversary today. I have been to the end of Clara Drive today and there is some sort of structure just past the gates. My other half seems to recall (from way back) that there may be some kind of writing/engraving on it. I am going to go back up soon and see if it is true of if he is pulling my leg.

If i remember rightly there was an engraving but i think it was something like a batch number. Might be wrong though! Is Calverley rock still standing strong? I havent ventured up for a while, might do so this sunday. Depending on the GF. Are the woods all flooded?

Having lived in Calverley for awhile in the 1970's, we were told by a neighbour, [Celia Croft, and member of the local History Group ], That there had been a light railway track through the woods down to the canal. Though only powered by horse, it carried the finished blocks of stone, on flat bogies to the canalside. Ready for transporting by barge. And if you ever walk along the canal , on the Calverley bank, you can still see the remains of the anchor points that were drilled into the rocks there, to support the loading derricks. But watch out for the bull.! the farmer used to run his bull in the field where this is.

You can also, by the canal side, see a metal frame on three posts. This was a marker for the midway point on the Midland Railway from London to Glasgow. Someone once told me that the sign itself had been seen in a North Bradford garden some years ago - ring a bell to anyone? Don't even know what it looked like (probably less fancy than those still surviving on the East Coast Mainline!).I think the rock is still there and I doubt that the woods are flooded (the water doesn't get anywhere near that high!) though they may be a bit boggy in places!

Does anyone know what this pond would have been used for, it's in the woods too.

Paul Bennett's 'Old Stones of Elmet' refers to a possible stone circle in these woods. There's obviously people 'here' who know them well. Has anyone seen anything which might fit the bill, or know of any local tales that might connect to this?(Bennett does say he searched the woods without success!)

I lived in Calverley for a while and searched the woods there too. Never did find the 'possible' circle. (I never managed to find the 'famous' prehistoric rock-art either. Managed to find some cup-marked stones, but not the famous 'fancy' design.) CheersDave

I have looked for the pond in Calverley Woods but can't find it ? Is it near the Clara Drive end of the Woods or the Calerley Church end ? Any clues greatly appreciated
