[quote="tyke bhoy"]Like this presumably Jack

Yes Indeed, but this was a very deep 'ole and I think it was probably nearer the Heaton's Factory on the corner of New York Road.

Think your picture might bethe makings of a a slip road onto the Ring Road as in the background there are two buildings side by side and on the one I have just posted there are two similar looking buildings up behind the parade of shops.

On the 1891 map in the centre of New Briggate opposite where the Rothwells buildings would be in a few years time, is a Cabmans Rest at the side of what seems to be a public urinal, unable to find a picture of one in Leeds I have posted a London Victorian one which I assume would be very similar.

Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Amazing detail on that map Buffalo. I assume LP is lamppost and FP is fireplug ( as mentioned in another thread about Cookridge Street. ). I am impressed that the tram track layout is shown even inside the depot on North Street. It would be a great source for anyone wanting to model the tram layout.

Tabbycat - thanks for identifying the car as a TR4/5.
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

I happened to see that map just before going into the centre of Leeds on March 8 so I had a look for the Bench Mark (BM) marked at the end of Merrion Street, but if it is still there it was hidden behind polished stone on the premises wall (or I just did not spot it!). I did not though go to look for the BM on the dispensary, so thanks buffaloskinner for showing that :).
