Apparently they were a van conversion which was done without much knowledge of the special requirements for service bus use, and many modifications had to be hastily carried out to get PSV clearance.On the fair side though, they did ride pretty comfortably and I rather liked them actually - they were certainly better than the 1986 Transits and Sherpas !!

Sometimes, mostly it's just full or illiterate racists arguing about yoghurt knitters just because they don't condemn people for being a different colour/religion/nationality.

Spot on again Blakey. One of the Mercs didn't want to go out on the first day. They were very unreliable. I had to pick up civic leaders and our GM Tommy Lord in the first week of operation then to City Station to pick up Enviromental Minister Michael Heseltine who had come to see the new pedestrian area. When he saw the bus he said "German you should be backing Britain". He boarded the bus I pressed the starter, not a peep. "Oh Lord" he said " I told you should buy British". the story goes on but I'll leave it at that.

The picture of the Electric press association at the bottom of Millenium Square takes me back to the fiftys the door on the right of building was the entrance you went in for the Leeds School Childrens Holiday Camp Association.I remember getting the coach here for a two weeks holiday at Silverdale sorry to say it was not my thing i ran away after two or three days and had to be brought back by the police.I had never been away from the streets in Hunslet and it was great when i got home after two weeks back on my own turf.

The Hopper shopper Merc bus proves that they ran in the pedestrian parts. Anyone else remember the Bristol Electric bus that was too quiet. Ended up playing a tune because it would creep up behind you.You'd turn round and have a bus bearing down on you. Great pictures and lots of really missed places.
