If I remember, it showed an artist's impression of an aerial way built above Park Row.I suppose the original over ground walkways were an early attempt at his. I seem to remember reading that the Bond St Centre [and the other bit that I can never remember the name of] were to be connected by a “T” shaped walkway; the long leg of the T to be connected to New Station St This would have provided more or less level access from City Station but never came to fruition. Thus the walkway connecting the two was joined to street level by the escalator.

Looking tomorrow then are we TOMORROW! he'll be in there like a rat up a drainpipe tonight Chameleon mate! lol

There's a bit about the former plans for Bond Street Centre in the Big Wooden Snake thread.

I could be mistaken but I seem to remember a lot of years ago an article in the Evening Post about Bond Street escalators that went nowhere - must be 30 years ago now.

Re the Bond Street/Station underpass - There a couple of hefty Victorian cast iron mains in this area. One runs straight down Park Row, through city square and into Bishopgate, heading South and a spur off this running along the north side of Boar Lane. Neither has been diverted at any time to make way for an underpass, so I have my doubts. The chapest way to build this sort of thing is cut a trench, build your passage and cover it up, moving any services around it. I don't remember this being done. The alternative is some sort of tunneling going on which is expensive. Any such passage would have to go through the footings of the Queens hotel and the arches of the station itself, think how it's built up above ground level on the arches and the fall of Bishopgate.

I think there is something in this. Talk of esculators going nowhere. Plans drawn up, newspaper articles e.t.c.We could do with getting someone in the know on the council here. There is a lot of talk bout stuff under the station/city square areas..

There may be something in what they would like to have done but I doubt any one got a spade dirty. IIRC there was controversey about the cost of the escalators up from Boar Lane, £500k comes to mind.

He does all the Leeds council structures. He was surveying Morley town hall clock tower while i was there.I have no reason to think he would elaborate or tell little porkies to be honest.
