So often the case with many things though Si, the values not appreciated until it is too late. Hind sight could keep Wiggy's time machine very busy.I still have a few inherited, old hand tools. So often I'm told I should replace them, but they function now as they did, 40, 50 years or more ago, and I'm proud of them. I did reliquish a large ancient hand saw recently though, with just less than 3 teeth to the inch, I could barely push it!

Your Kirkstall valley bit inspired me yesterday, needrd to go into town so went on bike. After Leeds centre I left via Dark Arches along the canal towpath. http://goo.gl/maps/qJSr6Plenty of boats at locks, the canal had blooms of weed but was generally crystal clear.Armley Mills was shut for the day, big lorries moving things.... so I couldn't cut through there to the leisure park, my favoured route:-http://goo.gl/maps/VLqNYInstead I walked up the stairs to Canal Rd bridge and down the other side over the metal bridge to Milford Placehttp://goo.gl/maps/38MN6Redcote Lane (why so called?) aiming to rejoin the canal. But an inviting gate http://goo.gl/maps/7K2Tdpromised Kirkstall Nature Reserve and so I went in and got lost. FORD OVER RIVER AT KIRKSTALLBut one interesting find was a sort of a Ford over the river. The whole area was overgrown and I was lost but I think it is here:-http://goo.gl/maps/iN8aGIt seemed to connect at either side with tracks and appeared to have been properly constructed with stone pathway leading down to the Ford in the river.[image - may need to copy paste]http://www.flickr.com/photos/16736742@N ... m/Although tempted, I was already lost and it appeared to be between six inches to one foot deep, and green/slippery.Back home on google map it seems to lead across to the island at the back of Morrisons, I don't know if there is another to get you off the island back to Kirkstall Rd.In the event I went back to Redcote Ln and slogged up Woodside View>St Annes Ln>Queenswood and home all very uphill. There's more to the Kirkstall Valley than I realised and with a proper map and maybe wellies I'll have a mooch again when time permits.http://www.ywt.org.uk/reserves/kirkstal ... re-reserve

This ford keeps cropping up for me Jogon - site founder Munki came across it the other week, just after I'd found myself lost up there a month or two back. I managed to cross over, but unfortunately it only leads to a small 'island' cut off from the rest of the river by the millrace at the back, presumably once connected to St Annes Mills. It's frustrating but there doesn't seem to be any way to follow the river from town up to Kirkstall.

I expect that back in the day, there was either a proper crossing or ad hoc bridge or 2 chains strung between trees at foot and hand height.Given that it is part of a nature reserve, I assume a through route wouldn't be wanted. And so, for now, only the brave dare cross...

Pleasant walk from Rodley / ring road along the canal to Leeds centre on sunday afty.About 6 miles, spoilt only by canal being closed off with workable diversion at Redcote Lne. I think some metal thieve low lifes had nicked £50 off cable releasing £100,000 worth of damage in oil coolant onto towpath and into canal.Apart from that fascinating view of a huge land mass twixt Ring Rd Rodley/ New Road site and the canal Rodley ln/Leeds Bradfd rd.Rodley nature reserve looks worth a visit.
