I am sure I remember before they re-developed the outside there was a road you had to cross to get to part of the outside bit.

Indeed tilly - the Royal Enfield engine did sound fabulous and it ran well enough, and economical on juice, but it was actually new enough to be fitted with the diabolical and useless "add on" electric starter as well as the traditional kick start. The electric starter was not up to the job at all, and had to be used only when the ammeter would you believe went into the green section, showing that the points were open. Well, the gearing on the starter sheared on mine (a common occurence evidently) and I took it to the dealer to be repaired - £372 !!
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Just a few Otley bits:Enterprise (if ever there was an inappropriate name) now have closed The Black Horse (Otley) The Black Horse (Askwith) and as of today the Red Lion(Otley). There are several notices in the window of the Lion explaining the tenant's position, and legal 'get out now' notices from Enterprise. Could the 'Fair Deal for your Local' campaign be a two-edged sword, as the Pubcos will never play fair and their rate of closures is increasing daily? The Ringers was re-named The Otley Tavern to let folk know it had changed and that many of its previous clientele would no longer be welcome.Punch have submitted plans for refurbishment of The White Swan but still await tenants.

P.S. Just on the bike bit - anyone else seen that single cylinder diesel Enfield that sometimes visits Dunnies? Must rev to about 400 rpm max! Home-built from a generator engine the chap said.

Do restaurants come under "pubs" for the purposes of this thread?(what the heck, it's still not the most off-topic post even if it doesn't)..Anthony's restaurant empire appears to have crashed - the place at the bottom of the corn exchange and in Victoria Quarter both closed with immediate effect.I wondered how long before this happened, and have every sympathy with the guy who was stitched up by the idiots who "redeveloped" the Corn Exchange - selling him the lease to be the "anchor" restaurant in a food shopping place that then turned out to, er, not be a food shopping place after all.Apologies again if I've posted this in the wrong place.

Some sort of timber frame construction is being erected in front of the Old Peacock opposite Leeds United. This may be a cause for optimism amongst local afficionados as well as the many Whites who used the boozer before and after home matches. On the other hand, it could be the early stages of one of the sets for the forthcoming and eagerly anticipated Beeston and Holbeck remake of 'The Wicker Man'.

Went in the newly named Otley Tavern last night, nice refit ,however a group of overloud lager swillers in there. When I head over to Otley from Leeds I usually head to Whittakers,Old Cock,Horse & Farrier ,Korks and the Junction.
