Joking apart, when I worked for Wallace Arnold in the 1960s we did a lot of journeys to Southend Airport with the continental tourists - we passed through Saffron Walden, which is a gorgeous Essex market town, and then Great Dunmow - a village where the annual "Dunmow Flitch" parade is held in the streets. This is an old custom where couples who could honestly claim to have never had a row in seven years could win a flitch of bacon (a flitch is a whole side of bacon IIRC).

Had a motorbike ride this after afternoon to Otley, Askwith, Ilkley etc and the Black Horse at Askwith looks well and truly closed without any blackboards outside about meals and opening times.

That's a worry - nice country pub. Ironically the Black Horse in Otley is also closed at present. For some reason the 'Ring O'Bells' has been 'rebranded' as the 'Otley Tavern'
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

[quotenick="drapesy For some reason the 'Ring O'Bells' has been 'rebranded' as the 'Otley Tavern'I don't know what the 1960s landlady of the Ring o' Bells would make of that She was a lovely elderly Irish lady dressed in black and always looked very serious and sad, but was charming and kindly to the customers. I always felt that Daisy Maloney was not privately happy, but one can be totally wrong with these impressions

Hi BLAKEY Off topic but what kind of bike do you ride.? I've had my faithful, comfortable Suzuki 600 Bandit from new (January 2003) and I wouldn't part with it at any price. For about four years I also had a Royal Enfield 500 Bullet which was great but, oh, the endless servicing and expensive parts so sold that. Now I've also got a Chinese Jinlun Texan 125 twin which I bought new in 2009 - £1,699 on the road - and its a corker. It looks very much like a Yankee cruiser and has luggage panniers and chrome everywhere and I love it. Ah well, back to the pubs - walking of course !!
