It came back to me with the very recent emphasis on what constituted - or did not constitute - H&S back in the day. No mention on SL before as far as I can see. This was a tip site inbetween High Street and Bridge Street. There have been two football pitches and a childrens playground - note no inverted commas this time - on there since the early seventies, maybe even the late sixties. I have heard that it was the tipping ground for the Beacon Works but I don't know if that is absolutely correct.Nor do I know the origin of the name 'Delph'. Was it something to do with the ceramics, pottery and glass etc that were strewn across the place, or was it something that went even further back in time than the Beacon Works?Perhaps the Major knows.     I used to play on the Delph. There was also some waste grass nearby (at the back of Dartmouth Ave) and we'd play scratch games of rugby on this grass. The Delph was also used by older lads (youths) as a motorbike scramble-speedway track.I was also reminded of the "Blue Lagoon" which was the flooded bottom of a quarry off Rein Road, god knows what made it blue! But we had a home made raft there and used to swim in it!

A variant of "relievo"First select a suitable site for "home" and an adjacent spot to which the can will be returned, "Dip" for who is to be "it" - "dip, dip, dip, my blue ship", "one potaty, two potaty, three potaty, four" or any other localy approved system. Place can on spot. Someone kicks the can away as far as possible, "it" retrieves can and returns it to the spot while everyone else scatters. "It" chases other players who when caught ("tigged") stay in the "home" until an uncaught player manages to kick the can away again, whereupon all caught players run free from the "home". Game continues until all players are caught, or until an argument ensues regarding rule breaking, unfair play, my brother can beat your brother etc. I think, allowing for local variations, I have remembered correctly, but it's a long time ago!

We also used to play a game called "Release" which was a team version of "Hide and Seek" There was a home "post" and the chasing team had to wait for the hiding team to disappear. You then sought them either singly or as a team and brought each one back to the home post. But any member of the running team could come and "tig2 the post and release any prisoners - I think I've got that right. In the area of Morley where I lived, depending upon the number of players we either played on the "triangle" The triangle was formed by Bridge Street, High Street and Britannia Road. Or we'd play on the square, made by High Street, Britannia Road, and Dartmouth Avenue. Dark nights, mixed sex teams and 13/14 year old boys and girls - say no more!

We used to play that in Harehills but we called it "Releveio".

We caled that 'Cogoff', I've no idea why, but only on seeker, possibly cos it was played in the confines of a back street, and the post was a ball that would be b0oted down the street to release those caught.
