Deaths of 2 ex-Leeds United players.

In the obituaries section of the Yorkshire Evening (YEP) today (May 23 2013) there is an announcement of the death (in Sydney, Australia) on May 13 of Brian Williamson aged 73, a "Former Leeds United Goal Keeper". I recall his short career at Leeds United and on looking up I found his last game was in January 1966. He however only played 8 games for United, as Gary Sprake was the first choice goal keeper most of the time.On page 55 of the YEP it reports that Brian Greenhoff died on May 22 aged 60 at his home in Rochdale. He was a defender and the brother of Leeds United's striker Jimmy Greenhoff and played his last game for United in 1982 according to the YEP.

I read about Brian Greenhoff after hearing it on 5LIVE last night. He was only 60. They actually said it was Jimmy and I thought Jimmy was more than 60. In the end he is 66 so thought it was strange. So looked it up on google this morning. Cant remember the goalie though. Remember Gary Sprake of course.There seems to be also a rush of musicians from my Youth also dying at the moment. Saw most of them at the Odeon or Leeds University in the 60's and 70's. RIP all the passed on people.

I was at Brian Williamson's last game for Leeds, although I must admit I don't remember much of it. 22 January 1966, a 6-0 FA Cup victory over Bury at Elland Road. It was my first time to a game. Myself and my fellow 10-year old mate went on our own. We nearly got crushed in the crowd outside the gate, but we got in all right. Got to the walkway at the back of the Kop, so that we wouldn't get caught in the crowd surges and a copper told us to get back in the Kop, safety or not we couldn't stay on the walkway.All I remember of the game was that Leeds just seemed to be attacking the whole time, so there was not much opportunity for Brian Williamson to shine to be honest.

Leeds bought Brian Williamson from Crewe Alexandra.He had been their keeper when they lost an FA Cup match at Tottenham Hotspur by the memorable score of 13-2.I think it was Revie who bought him. He obviously saw something he liked.On the 6-0 win against Bury johnnyg, that will have been the first time you saw Colin Bell play. He was their inside right. Correction : I could remember the 13-2 result. Just checked and found it was an Evans who was the unlucky man in the green jersey that day. This was in February 1960. BW signed the following summer.

That's very sad news. Colin was a great experienced influence on the then still young Leeds United team. Colin was an expert at the banana shot free kicks where he put a huge swerve on the ball.

I was in the Army when Bobby Collins signed for Leeds and my best mate at that time was an avid "Toffee". I always remember him saying that Leeds had bought a diamond in Bobby Collins, he wasn't wrong, he was an absolute dynamo. I wish there was one like him in today's team, correction - eleven of them. Sad news.
