For fun (and interest to see how it looked) I've just reduced a photo to 960 x 200 pixels and have attached it here. I took the normal original on February 16 2013 (the day the Big Wheel attraction opened) and though the area is clearly recognisable it does look odd in such a ratio. Clearly there is an art that I've not acquired with the image editing programs I have to reducing photos to that ratio but without contortion in the final result.

Banner photos are best cropped to fit banner size, instead of reducing the whole photo to fit a banner. If you reduce a full photo it makes everything squashed up, and distorted, the photo contents are then far too small to see. I'm assuming Duncan will place the whole photo into a specified 'banner size box' then move the photo up and down till he's got the best part of the photo featured. Anyone who uses flickr, facebook, or similar websites where you crop your buddy icon, or avatar will know what I mean. Banner photos are pretty hard to get right I.M.O. You might have a brilliant photo, but once cropped to fit into a narrow photo it looks rubbish. It's best to look at a full photo, and then see if you have an interesting narrow picture within the main photo.
My flickr pictures are herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/Because lunacy was the influence for an album. It goes without saying that an album about lunacy will breed a lunatics obsessions with an album - The Dark side of the moon!
