Another Leeds Institution Goes Under

I'm deffo sure it was one of the units nearest the ramp int he bit that the arrow is pointing to. I rememebr them having two shop united connected and then a drum place upstairs or somehting? I used to go there to get resin for my violin that I learned how to play for a bout 10 mins when I was younger!

Having looked into this a bit more, you are right, so my apologies for questioning your memory last night! It appears that Scheerers have had three addresses within the Merrion Centre - No. 8 (which is where I remember it), No. 12-14, which is now Rayner Opticians, so you are spot on although I didn't remember it at this location, and then 88-90 (near the bowling alley).

What a shame. I bought my first electric guitar and amp from their North Street shop in the early 60s. The guitar was a Futurama and the amp a Selmer. Later I bought a Watkins copycat from there. I can still picture the inside of the shop in my head. I remember their shop in the Merrion Centre but I can't remember the inside of that!!

Same here, first guitar and amp came from there - Encore (Korean) Fender Strat copy and a 10 watt practice amp, brand now forgotten.

From memory ?The YEP ran an article last year about them,some anniversary or other and they asked for anyone who kwew them of old to relate their memories.My mother had one or two which I e-mailed and never got a response from them.She is 93 next and lived sort of Leylands/North St as a child.Will ask her tonight.

Mam lived in Brown (SQ ?) off Skinner Lane and Scheerers first shop was on Skinner Lane.This would be 1920-1930 ish.Their son Billy worked in the shop and was her parents landlord, he owned several properties in the area.They sold lots of different stuff hardware etc.and must have specialised on the music side later on.Mam's family had an artificial christmas tree from them which must have been a first.Also bought from Scheerers was a fire guard around that time which we had at our house until we moved into an all electric place in the early 60's.It was 2 elongated U shaped metal pieces seperated by several metal rods which fitted into holes on the two pieces,great to sit on and get warm in the winter !
