I've heard that too (and read it on information boards in the Abbey) Quote: In the years after the dissolution the lead roofs, windows and furnishings were removed and to prevent the monks from returning, the main road into Leeds was diverted through the Nave and great East window. Hopefully that this works! If it has worked there will be a copy of an engraving of Kirkstall Abbey that is opposite page 19 in John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire' vol 1 published in 1861. The quality of the scanned copy is not good, so I hope it is acceptable.Along the bottom and virtually out of sight the engraving is titled 'South East View of Kirkstall Abbey in 1769'. The engraving was 'Engraved by H Le Petit' and was 'Published by Joseph Johnson'.

Does anyone know if KA is still floodlit at night?It used to look wonderful.

Here is a crazy idea, why not convert Kirkstall Abbey into STUDENT ACCOMMODATION! - they could even make a secret tunnel that would link the Abbey Student Halls with the Brotherton Library (or Student Union bar) where students spend more time...

Hi jogon It is true the road did go right through the abbey there are plaques in parts of the grounds.If you look in the knave there is a plaque telling you the road went through there.
No matter were i end my days im an Hunslet lad with Hunslet ways.

Ah, so the Kirkstall Abbey Tunnel may in fact be a major road, possibly the motorway equivalent of its time!
