Very funny cnosni.Leo, wait until the better weather and go have a wander around, it's wonderful. The atmosphere (especially on an evening) is quite something. Make sure you visit the Museum too, you'll not be disappointed and buy some old pennies when you purchase your entrance ticket for the machines in there. I'd just like to say that Kirky Abbey is a famous RUIN and it should remain so. The Museum opposite has a model showing how it used to be for those interested. Imagine what would happen if huge amounts of money were spent on the re-building of it. I can see it now...instead of the lovely grounds there'll be Mc Donalds, Pizza Hut, Nero's, Tesco Express, a Car Park and anything else you can imagine so's to make back money.

Impression of it 1200'sEither full rebuild, or complete demolition. Thoresby's Ducatus has a 1715 line drawing of ruins as was then.

I think the drawing is an artist's interpretation of the abbey from an earlier time, ie before the crossing tower (the remains we see now) was built. It can't be the ruins as they were in 1715 as it is completely roofed. The first thing Henry's demolition men did was take the lead and timber from the roof.

Si you're rightdetail says "drawing of Kirkstall Abbey as it probably looked in 1230 was made by Dr. David Thornton"don't have Thoresby's drawing but seen it and it's similar to todays.
