Have a look through the current 'Where was the photographer stood?' thread for that particular area of Leeds.There are photographs showing Elmwood Cottages - remember them? - and a map which the Golden Cross is at the centre of.Would you know the origin of 'Golden Cross' around that area LS1? What with the pub and the cafe called that there has to be some derivation somewhere.

Well, it was know as the Golden Cross corner and I assume it was because of the prominence of the pub.I did a lot of overlays years ago with that photo of resurrection cottage and the modern stuff so I think I am au fait with the layout from a map perspective, there just dont seem to be pics of the jnc of meanwood road North Street and Sheepscar Street South. There is an aerial view that I ordered from Leodis but the junction is right at the left edge so you cant really see it too well.

That's a fascinating photo Phill. I had not realised that there were still a row of shops there on North Street in 1974 (where Plumb Center is now). I wonder when they were demolished?

Here's the top end, even the building college hasn't been built at that time. I remember a few of those old run down buildings still standing next to the college in the early 1980's still.

So the golden cross pub was in the centre of the photos at the bottom on the island where the white and blue cars are parked. It seems the road was re-modeled in this area also and the golden cross cafe was knocked and the road widened to what it now looks like next to the plumb centre.
