It's certainly pretty out there at the moment, a city under a soft fluffy blanket

In 1881 it was inhabited by Christina Campbell, widow, mother of James and George Campbell who ran the Hunslet Engine Co. Ltd. in Jack Lane.Interior view showing the Drawing Room of Highfield House in Gledhow Lane. It is likely to have been taken in the 1880s when George Campbell was in residence.

So that's the one that viewed Hillside.Wondered what & where & who's it was. Oddly, as kids, we rarely if ever 'crossed the beck' (and then usually by the tunnel under GV Rd).Gledhow Manor, more modern, over that side was also home to some Industrialist. Wonder if he ever walked to the pub as I've done.

Yes it's the very same Highfield house from where this photo was taken across the valley. The field next to Hillside is now totally wooded as seen herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/840453 ... stream/And this is how it looks today.Gledhow Grange before it was demolished stood where the care home is that I've marked. The chimney of Hillside, the lovely house on the bend of Gledhow Lane can just be seen in the trees. The line of trees hasn't changed in all those years, but they're is no sign of the tall poplar trees on the archive photo.
