SPLAY=FULL This pic brings back some happy memories of my teenage years.Going back to the 50's ,this was one pub that we could be served under-age,along with the Volunteer at corner of Water lane, just around the corner from the Goodman. The room on the right was where the jukebox stood and our little group of under-age drinkers would spend many a Saturday night in there, doing nobody any harm and having a good laugh, playing dominoes!Walter Winterburn was the landlord at that time. Some time later when I was quite a few years older I came across Walter again, this would be inthe late 60's and by then I was married and living in Drighlington. He had moved to the Spotted Cow there.I moved house and lived in Bramley and then after a further 3 years moved to Farsley also changing jobs. I went to work as a bus driver out of Bramley Depot and not long after was joined by Walter Winterburn who had left the licensed trade and became a bus driver! He was a bit of a character was Walter and would say to people he was talking to in the canteen "I've been there" Some wag then decided that wherever they went they would write upon the wall, mostly in the gents,"Walter Winterburn was 'ere". I know 'cos I've seen this in gents toilets in Blackpool and Bridlington! Don't get the wrong idea chaps! My visits were very nesessary! Unfortunately,Walter died some years ago.

Walter was landlord of the Goodman's fom July 1960 through until June 1967 when he moved to the Lingfield in Moortown. Unfortunately, I don't know how long he stayed at the Lingfield, but from what you say it must have only have been a couple of years.Coincidentally, the tenant of the Woodcock at Moor Top, Farnley, at the end of the 60’s [and not a million miles away from the Spotted Cow] was also named Winterburn [Ernest Henry]. I wonder if he was related?

I think it would be 1967-70 when he had the Spotted Cow at Drigh.as I only lived there 3 years and he took over late in my short stay there. The landlord before him at the Cow was called Noel and he took a pub in Colne. The Station Hotel I think? My wife worked for Noel at the Cow for a year or so.As to Ernest Henry Winterburn,I suppose it's possible they could be related, if it was around the same time. Was it Walters brother that tipped hime off that the Spotted Cow was becoming vacant? Could be?I suppose thats how things worked in those now far-off days!It was often told that before I moved to Drighlington in '66 that the Spotted Cow had a talking dog in residence there! Someone showed me a newspaper clipping form the YEP about this famous dog! People came from miles around to see this phenomenon! It must have died before I went to live there,as I never saw the dog.

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

I should think a bank loan would be needed to buy 15 pints these days !

The erstwhile Wellington on Wellington street has reopened and reverted to former name of 'The Central'Anyone know what happened to the Tommy Wass? has it closed or is it a refurb?
