Evening all.I happened upon this picture on a football fans' forum. (can't seem to embed it for some reason). It features Elland Road football stadium, but also what appears to be three other grounds: the dog track, a cricket ground labelled "Islington Cricket Ground" and another ground to the West of the football ground.Seems that part of town was quite the sports mecca at one time. Does anybody have any further info on these sites? Specifically the grounds to the east and west of the football stadiumAlso - was that part of Leeds ever known as Islington or are my wires horribly crossed?!Cheers!

The map labels "Islington" and "Cricket Ground" are separate. The area was called Islington , but it seems to have fallen into disuse a long time ago. The cricket ground was Holbeck Cricket Ground, the home of Holbeck Cricket Club which survived to the early 1960s.
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

SPLAY=FULL Uncle Mick can I ask - if the pub next to the cricket ground was the new peacock, as pictured in the link you provided above, then when did the pub across from the football ground become known as the peacock - and is that the same pub that appears on the map above or is the current peacock a newer build ?

SPLAY=FULL Uncle Mick can I ask - if the pub next to the cricket ground was the new peacock, as pictured in the link you provided above, then when did the pub across from the football ground become known as the peacock - and is that the same pub that appears on the map above or is the current peacock a newer build ? Once upon a time, the Old Peacock was the only pub on Elland Road with Peacock in the name. It was somewhere opposite the football ground, near to where the 'new' Old Peacock is now. With it so far? Then they built another pub which they called the New Peacock. This was on the opposite side of Elland Road towards the city. Then the Old Peacock was knocked down and the New Peacock became the oldest pub on Elland Road with Peacock in the name.Shortly afterwards, a new Old Peacock was built somewhere near the site of the old Old Peacock. This was newer than the New Peacock which was eventually demolished so that natural order was restored when the new Old Peacock once again became the only pub on Elland Road with Peacock in the name.Glad that's over.

The old "Old Peacock" was situated further forward of and to the west of the new "Old Peacock" [to the right as you look at the front of the pub] and lasted until 1963, the new "Old Peacock" opened for business on Valentines Day 1963 [a Thursday]. I wonder if there was a match on Saturday 16th to "break it in"?The New Peacock lasted into the early 70's.
