It was originally Leeds and Bradford Municipal Airport and was jointly owned by Leeds and Bradford councils. It became a limited company in 1987 with Leeds and Bradford holding 40% of the shares each and Wakefield, Calderdale and Kirklees holding the remaining 20%. Airports tend to be named after a nearby town or towns as a kind of advertising so you know where to aim for and generally more people would know where Leeds was than West Yorkshire.

The problem is that when anything goes wrong (and it can be something surprisingly minor - I've seen 3 miles of tailback as numpties slow to look at the RAC changing someones tyre on the hard shoulder....) then it quickly backs up and takes forever to return to anything like normal. There are no alternative routes worthy of the name - within half an hour of any sort of hold up west of Chain Bar, you'll find Halifax, Brighouse and Huddersfield also grind to a halt as traffic dives off the motorway looking for a route around.Manchester Airport is well under 60 miles from Leeds City centre (regardless of which way you go around the M60), so at a steady 70mph is easily do-able in under an hour - remember it's virtually all motorway door to door. I'm lucky enough to live near enough Yeadon Aerodrome that a taxi is a lot cheaper than a train to Cheshire Airport so I tend to opt for Yeadon as it means I can get more sleep too.I actually like travelling from and to Yeadon as the queues through security aren't as long as larger airports and the return flight often ends in a carrier-like landing -- not to mention the aerial views of Leeds.The Taxi monopoly seems a blatant bribe payoff* but, thankfully, is easily worked around by knowing the number of a decent local private hire firm that is not part of the cartel*.*Aledgedly, heard from many private hire drivers of various companies.

The domestic business flights could be missing out, I take the train to London because by the time I get to LBA, through security and flight bound I can be in London. Having said that I once came back from Heathrow in 40 mins to LBA. If there was fast access to the airport it might be a better option than the train.

I used to live close to Jct 27 so from there it really was about equidistant time-wise - about 45 mins off peak. However. In September, going with my friend from Leeds I flew out from LBA and flew back into MAN [cos it was cheaper to do it that way ]And I won't do it again. Getting back through passport control at MAN was horrendous. Endless snaking barrier queues - it took just short of an hour to get to the luggage carousel. In that respect LBA is much better.I'm lucky here though - I normally use NCL, which is a smashing little airport and even provides an airside smoking pod connected to the bar for evil weed addicts like me.

Unfortunately most people don't have one of these passports yet and probably the majority of those that do can't use it either.Who has to have their passport renewed most often? Under 16s at every 5 years. Who can not use the byometric queue unless accompanied by an adult who also has a byometric passport. Under 16s!

Apparently the rail link "will happen":http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-19978920The plan (according to BBC Radio Leeds) is for every council tax bill in West Yorkshire to go up by £7 to pay it...no mention of the private owners of the airport chipping in, unsurprisingly. Bit of a cheek that, I don't use the airport, so why should I pay?
