The Headrow with a view of Lewis's Department Store opened in September 1932.

There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

It may get confusing when John Lewis opens its store at the Eastgate Quarter (assuming that does go ahead) as John Lewis is not related (as far as I'm aware) to the old Lewis's stores.

That's quite correct Leodian, there is no connection beween the two groups, as the different spellings confirm - the dear old firm was "Lewiss's." The John Lewis Partnership is a London based giant with stores all over the UK and, from wht I know from a former family member, extremely good staff conditions.Personally, selfish perhaps, I hope that the Eastgate fiasco never goes ahead. It will mean the wholesale destruction of perhaps the last surviving area of "Old Leeds" - and any further pedestrianisation and ridiculous street closures will cause utter chaos on a scale worse than anything we've suffered to date - and that's been plenty - just look at the traffic shammbles in Eastgate/Headrow already.

How old is the Eastgate stuff that will be knocked down? the Lady Lane stuff has always been a dump in my living memory. Looks on the plans that they will be keeping some of the frontage actually on Eastgate, but not all, don't think I will miss Milgarth either. It just seems to be a pretty underutilised bit of town at the moment, its pretty much impossible to drive up and down at the moment anyway, not sure why it would create chaos traffic wise? Am I missing something obvious , as always ! ?

Perhaps I've over simplified things and not studied the proposals in very great detail - and a one time threat to destroy the Templar pub was uppermost in my mind. However, I do still think that the reduction, over the years, of through thoroughfares in the City centre has caused the present traffic chaos, and Goodness knows how the emergancy services are expected to quickly reach any major incident already. The Trinty shopping centre is due to open before long so do we really need any more retail outlets, especially in these times of difficult trading ?? I would have thought that the plain white clinical and totally characterless "Core" in the Headrow might have been a warning to investors. Whatever the outcome though - if customer support for the Eastgate scheme does materialise, where on Earth are all the shoppers' cars, buses etc going to go ??
