For me the first step would be an easy one. They should clear out the old market, give them units in the "new" market at reduced rents (for all) and redevelop the old one into a massive lunch venue and craft market. Modelled on Spitalfields or Leadenhall in London.A pub, veggie restaurants, barbecue pits, far eastern style street cooking, south american tortilla stalls, top quality greek gyros stalls. There is a balcony (currently unused) which could house coffe shops (at which you would be allowed to bring your street food) and maybe book stalls. Something worthy and interesting. Traditional barbers, a shoe shine stall, smarten game row up a bit, a central area for music performance or temporary themes stalls.Don't you think that would be great?

I can see where your coming from, but I would prefer the local craft / food / quality traders to be allowed to go about their busines in the market are for a minimal rent! The council have obviously got some special plans for the market cos they are pricing out the small business with massive rents!! I have never seen so many empty units as there is at present. Totally wrong imo, but the council once again has obvioau plans to turn the grandest market in the country into some overpriced venue of the big chains etc.LCC seems NEVER to support the local community. I have heard some disgraceful things from the council, far too dangerous for me to put here. The poo would hit the fan on full force if the truth got out!! Still, this is going far too off topic and we risk a boll***ing if we continue! Apolgies!

At the National Tramway Museum in Crich which holds - I believe - most of the records of Leeds City Transport there should be the following document : MEMORANDUM from the TRANSPORT COMMITTEE to the RECONSTRUCTION COMMITTEE of the Leeds City Council 25th day of July 1944 .This memorandum discusses the subways to be built .On 12 August 1944 the then Leeds City Engineer ( a good , honest title , no " Directors " in those days ) Colonel W.S. Cameron placed his comments before the Reconstruction Committee . If not still archived at the Civic Hall this document willalmost certainly be at the offices of the West Yorkshire Archive Service at Sheepscar .When I puzzle out how to do it I shall enclose the relevent pages from " Leeds Trams 1932 - 1959 " by Andrew D. Young .Some time later I find I can't send the scanned papers perhaps because of the volume of information on the eight pages . After ten minutes or so my computer stops the sending process .If " munki " or any one else would like to see the relevent pages Ishall be happy to fax or post copies .

If they flog it off an it get "developed" like the Post Office was in City square I want a refund of my council tax for 10 years. It needs to be a community building not just expensive dining or shopping. It does need developing though and the standard market stalls should really be in the "new" market to make way for something which will attract more money. Currently no-one from the financial quarter of Leeds (except me it seems) ever visits the market. Neither should it be a flea market though. Every other European country seems to get it right so the model is already there it just needs implementing. A long term view of rents and even profit sharing schemes would be a good idea. they can't develop it and then expect trader to pay for it all over a few short years.

As the thread is about tunnesl from LCS, I didn't want to hog the thread by moaning about the best market in the country! I love the market, yet so manypeople I worked with thought it was a dross palce to go, full fo scum were the words used by some. Unfortunately, it has fallen from grace over the years, yet the council, as ever, refuse to tend to the issue. Yes they upkeep the building and refurbih it as and when. However, the rents have now got to a point that the traders are closing down faste than at any other time. Like you say, so many European countries treat such municiple buildings with reverence, not us. We force all out and redevelop such into massive shopping malls! (I hate those americanisations).......I fully agree with your assesment of how it should be done. Part of it ripped out and refurbished to atract a quality modren shopping area. cheap rents, share dividends etc would all be massive encouragement to the decent traders in there! It really is such a shame to see the lack of true support from the council. 3rd largest city in England we may be, however the council are so far up the [edited] of business that the real folk of the city always take a back seat!!

Back on topic.I was doing a bit of searching in the more obscure parts of the Council's IT structure and I came across this in the basement of a town centre building. (I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you.)It's down from the Merrion Centre towards Millennium Square. If that's not a bricked up tunnel, I don't know what is.

Oh, and as for the cutaway plans for the underground railway. Maybe the geology is too difficult in Leeds but Munich managed it. There's a small town under their railway station.
