I watched a repeated programme presented by Michael Palin mid week and was intrigued to learn that George Elliot the last 'battle casualty' of the WWI was from Leeds.Having 'goggled' his name I was intrigued to find that the majority of info was on this forum...having lived in Leeds most of my life I was not aware of this forum and have spent the last three days reading most of the postings with great interest - well done all it really is very interesting. In regards to George it would appear that he lived near East End Park which is close to where my family originated from (We are 'Brownridges', as in the haulage people)...anyway I have a great interest in military matters so my very first posting is...does any one have any details about 'Home Guard' units of Leeds...many thanksPhil

Welcome. I seem to remember some of your family lived in WoodHouse in the 60s
Is it me or has Leeds gone mad

Hello, welcome.I don't know of any home guard info but sometimes collections like Imperial War Museum have data and images. This is one of theirs:Spotter and predictor operators at a 4.5-inch anti-aircraft gun site in Leeds, 20 March 1941.

A Google suggests that more info on the Leeds Home Guard is available from the West Yorkshire Archive, but their on-line search facility doesn't seem to be working.West Yorkshire Archive Service2 Chapeltown Road SheepscarLeedsLS7 3APEnglandTel: 0113 214 5814Fax: 0113 214 5815 Email: [email protected]://catalogue.wyjs.org.uk/Default.aspx?However, you'll need to be quick as the website states: "The Archive will be closed from 30 August 2012 as it is being moved to new premises."
