Yep bang on Jim, you've done it again!http://www.ngw.nl/int/gbr/scot/invernessb.htmMany of the other shields, including Leeds, only show the centre of the coat of arms - so there is no doubt this is Inverness.
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Well done, jim. I really do think that's the one!!!Leodians Thread has taken me to sites I'd never have dreamt of visiting and as per, I've enjoyed the education!I've even found out that a teaspoon I have of my late mother's with the InterCity logo on it is worth quite a bit!Anyway, before I leave you in peace, I thought I'd tell you of a site which I found most interesting showing Bas Relief Brickwork Images at Liverpool Street Station. Really interesting. I can't post the link as I do not know how to, sorry."Liverpool Street-Great Eastern Railway Society" should lead you to it.Caron.

The webpage has information on the Bas Relief Brickwork part way down:- http://www.gersociety.org.uk/index.php? ... &Itemid=35

Cheers Caron. I've also learnt a lot as I had thought when I took the photos that the carvings were in some way all only Leeds related. I was wrong! Thanks to all for the identifications of the carvings.

I took this photo today (August 18 2012). It is of a London Midland & Scottish Railway sign that is over the door to No. 1 Aire Street. It is therefore not at the arch with the carvings that this thread is about but it is still on the Queens Hotel building (I don't know if No. 1 Aire Street is actually part of the hotel). I thought in view of its LM&SR connection it would be of interest to put it into this thread.

I took this photo today (August 18 2012) of an LM&SR carving on the frontage of the Queens Hotel (there is a similar one further along the frontage).

It's not part of the hotel, I think it was built after the hotel, but at the same time if that makes sense! It was the London Midland Railway offices though I guess they built it to look like the rest of the building. I believe that there are plans afoot to incorporate it into the hotel though so it can get on it's way to get the 5 star status. I'm sure there is a picture in the hotel itself from around 1937/8 when the hotel is finished and the LMS building is half built.

Thanks for that LS1. I thought it may not be part of the Queens Hotel but I was unsure.

Although No 1 Aire Street offices are not "part of the hotel", both were built by and for the LMS in the late 1930s, both carry LMS crests, and to the best of my knowledge both share a fire exit staircase at the point where they "join".
