The leeds chimney pot!

I found this rather unusual place not so long ago.It wasn't until then that I found out Leeds has it's own style chimney pot design called the Leeds 'Scullery Hooded' or the 'Hooded Leeds 3 Bowl Pot' There is quite a big collection of old Victorian chimney pot designs. They often go unnoticed perched high above our heads, but some were very ornate indeed with grand names. A lot of the old pots were designed and named after chess pieces like the Big Bishop, Rook pot, and the Knight pot. Bradford has it's own chimney pot called the 'Bradford Windguard' and not to be outdone Halifax has the 'Halifax 3 Bowl Pot'Others further afield are the 'Southport Pot' and 'Carlisle Blow Down Pot'(Don't go near that one when it's windy) The Leeds scullery hood.The Hooded Leeds 3 Bowl Pot.Still made today, the manufacturers Leeds pot dimensions.I guess at one time the architect of the houses would have stipulated the correct pot for that area. It would be interesting to see if our own Leeds chimney pot is still the dominant one to be seen on the roof tops across Leeds.This one isn't a chimney pot, but I liked it because it looked like a Mr Nosey with a green head of fern hair You can see why people use them as planters in the garden.

Great photos. Is the place you found in Leeds, were the pots for sale?

I can't say too much about the place as it wasn't the pots I was interested in at the time. They seemed to be rejects just dumped, lots, and lots of them discarded. It seemed a bit potty to me

Shame they're not for sale, especially if they're just dumped and not being used for anything else - would love some of those for the garden!As usual, great pics and a good find Phill!

I'm probably wrong, but I think the chimney pots in Phill's pictures are actually underground water(?) pipes. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks Lily, yes it was certainly a strange place in the land of the flower pot men Some have been there donkeys years, they must make a great habitat for the woodland wildlife.I think you could create an amazing garden with all this stuff.

It was the place where the fireclay originally came from in days gone by is what I was interested in. The 'underground bit lol' I need a few more visits yet, the site is still going, but this is out of the works premises and into thick woodland. It's just a huge store dump for cast off and reject casts from over the years by the looks of it.
