Of course, if these people were as important as their self inflated egos would have them believe, they wouldn't be having to work on the train at all would they? Ravey - no matter what the service frequency is all public service buses have to run to a published timetable, by law.Whoever told you that was talking out of the top of their hat I'm afraid, if an operator was to run six buses in the first ten minutes of a given hour then nothing for 50 minutes they would be facing some very stiff penalties from local authority and in all likelyhood they would lose there tender for that service.Incidentally, the published timetable for every single bus on the road must be carried by that bus whilst it is operating the service ( commonly called the running board ), this is also legal requirement. It was actually someone at Metro who said that in response to a complaint about timekeeping....they also went on to say that all they could do was to pass any comments onto Worst...Thanks for clarifying it though.

One of the jobs I had on the railway involved confirming that the name and address given by people unable to pay their fare to the train conductor. They used to ring in on the 'ship to shore'line as we called it.We used to check the details with an office in I think Portsmouth who checked the electoral roll, this was in the 90's before such information was as readily available as now.One report came into the office dealing with the repayments and had not had a 'live'check. The lady thought it suspicious as the name given was Wassock with a Doncaster address,it checked out O.K.,apparently there are several wassocks living in Doncaster.

I can confirm that dogduke - I carried quite a few of the Doncaster Wazzocks on services 410/411 from Leeds - they must be quite a prolific family !!

Classic.....so funny guys if you get my drift. The woman who alighted our bus earlier today(minus bag on back seat) was oblivious to our hand signage, protestatations and gestations....she had an infernally loud, personal stereo,hi-fi auditorium equivalent gadget wrapped around her head.....wassock !Still got off the bus without......she thought we were all loonies !

I couldn't agree more dogduke - I was one of the relative minority who did the job because I really wanted to, and I wouldn't have changed my choice for anything else - other than the middle years when I reluctantly served as an inspector and loathed it but that's another story I chuckled at your terminology "working with the travelling public does have its ups and downs " - Yes, especially when conducting on double deckers !!

So, as an innocent Pontefract driver helping out quite often at Belle Isle between 1994 and 2001, I seem to have unwittingly been involved in a thriving criminal cash Mafia eh ?? I know you can't say any more, and I possibly wouldn't remember many of the stars, but I'd love to know who they all were.

I had occasion yesterday to make one of my regular visits to Bradford, by means of the really good 72 service from the Bramley area, in a proper bus. As satisfied passengers sat in adequate space and comfort with a very decent Bradford Depot driver (to be fair the vast majority are) I couldn't help wondering if these good souls have any idea what is to befall them in October. When we passed the dreadful sight of the remains of Thornbury Depot/Works, almost demolished now, I just had an awful feeling that "The end of the World is nigh" Just on another point which has been raised recently here - it was a sunny day, and the pitiful "stopping" pale blue sign on the back of the smoked glass staircase could not be seen at all. Having said that though it was encouraging that there was very little "multiple bell ringing" as each stop approached - if only such common sense was prevalent among passengers in the Leeds area.
