I remember when the Atlanteans started to replace the back loaders and the old drivers couldn't get used to letting people on at the front! You used to have to run to the front of the bus as he overshot! They still had conductors on then as the old boys couldn't master the ticket machine :-)

I wonder if the conductors were hoping they'd be kept on in the same way that firemen were for many years on the railways!

Hey Phill who are you calling old boys. My grandad was a busdriver and a bloody good driver. But you're right really,,,, he admitted that he was slighty 'confused' at first when he had to actually take money, talk to passengers and stop the bus at the wrong place.

Thanks carrotol, good sense of humour! I'm doing my best to stick with relevant stuff to why this website was created. It's good to hear all these recollections & glad it's brought back some good memories. Have you any old pics from those days?

I would have to ask my mother. I don't recall ever seeing any pics. I've still got his drivers pocket watch though (totally useless info). He was a tram driver before that. God! can you imagine the confusion which came with that changeover.

I can. Things changed very slow in those days. Nothing really started to get modern untill the early 80's i'd say with the advent of the video recorder & remember the first telly games console tennis thing? People in the old days couldn't adapt to change unlike these days. We get a mobile phone & within a few months it's antiquated. Yes i bet it was a shock to your dad. Good you still have the pocket watch momento!

If I remember tomorrow I will take a pic. There is nothing special about them. Just a basic silver coloured pocket watch. Still works though. And you forget what ticking watches sound like til you hear one of these in your bedroom
