If permission is granted that is. And by the look of the signs, perhaps it has.Do we really need more supermarkets? Think the "7 flats over" will be the big attraction for a developer....didn't the big building next door used to be a supermarket ? My dad used to go in the pub over 30 years ago when its fortunes were quite positive.....was mates with the landlord who carried a lot of local respect back then......sadly something missing today for several reasons.

The supermarket next door was a new build in the sixties when Grandways were the first occupants. I think it was a KwikSave when it closed down.It was built on the site of the old doctors surgery which moved about fifty yards up the road. Drs Vanstone etc.One good tale concerning the New Inn from way back. I heard that Brian Shaw used to go in for a sherry on his way to doing battle for the lads in myrtle and flame down Parkside Lane.On one occasion he was spotted but also reported by a whistle-blower who made sure his information got back to the Hunslet committee. Shaw was hauled before them, warned as to his future conduct and fined.Shortly afterwards he made the short trip across the city to Headingley for a world record fee - think it was £12,500.You've guessed already. On walking into the Leeds RL dressing room for his first home match, what was the first thing he saw on the table for willing participants to have a go at? Correct. Sherry!

He was certainly landlord at the Tommy Wass for a while. Don't know about a Hunslet pub. May have got the area wrong...Think there was quite a few of the old league players that finished up in the pub game....from one side of the bar to the other

There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
