I had the unfortunate task of accompanying someone to A&E at Jimmys yesterday and noticed the significant shortage of nurses there. There was one Sister and one staff nurse along with 4 healthcare assistants on duty. After spending 5 hours in the emergency department and seeing one doctor once (2 minutes) and an healthcare assistant who took bloods the person was moved to a ward. The question is where have all the nurses gone, is it something to do with staff cutbacks or is there something more sinister afoot.

I could go on at length about this subject but will try and keep it short. My own experiences of A & E depts(all the same, jimmys,LGI,Pinderfields) are that they are seriously undermanned and inefficient. This is,after all,the "business end" of the NHS like operating theatres etc etc so should definitely be staffed fully. The healthcare assnts are there to do the basics upon arrival and to tick a box to say the patient has been "seen" within the target timescale. All window dressing for statisticians and PR depts. The 5hr waits are certainly not uncommon, hence people in corridors, booths on beds unattended etc. Some hospitals then send you to an interim observation(holding) ward for even more hours whilst a bed may be sourced should you require admittance. The annoying thing about this how often you actually get onto the required ward that several beds have remained unoccupied all day or even longer.Such are the inefficiencies of this part of the NHS.Don't blame the nurses......the senior admin and executives should carry the can for this fiasco.I think I'll leave it at that for now ! Suffice to say your observations are correct and pertinent.

Labour said It was the Tories fault they left the country billions in debt, they made such a mess of things last time they were in government it took them ages to try sort it out. The nurses have largely been replaced with new NHS managers. They aren't quite so good at treating people, nor do they have much in the way of bedside manner, but they do have nicer cars and are excellent at form filling, powerpoint presentations and graphs.1x fully qualified, experienced nurse= c.£25k inc overtime / shift allowance1x NHS manager, £40k+bonus+luxury German car+benefitsYou do the math.Thank you Tony B-liar

Yes Caron,as one who has been in various hospitals 10 times in last 3 years + numerous outpatient appts,a&e visits, I know full well what you mean.I was in 4 weeks at LGI 2010 and very poorly indeed after contracting hospital acquired pneumonia following a simple procedure.I was "out of it "for 2 weeks on serious antibiotics but my family were very upset at the lack of nursing care.I'm not blaming individuals or the nurses per se.....it's the system at fault and the total breakdown in the older, more acceptable cultures and behaviour that lends itself to the current demise.I dread having to go back in truthfully. My confidence is shaken by what I have witnessed on many occasions. Is this what Cameron is doing to OUR NHS ?
