The Gatehouse in the original question brought memories back.My Gran used to live in Burley and would take my sister and I for long walks so she could end up having a drink in the WMC laugh. We used to call it the Witches House as to us it looked like Hansel and Gretels Ginger Bread house. So pleased no one has knocked it down.p,s, not living in Leeds now for many years, can anyone tell me the name of the WMC or pub with a very large garden for sitting out in. It was I think not far from the Hyde Park Cinema. Brain has faded now for that area of Leeds. They used to have a lady piano player. Thats all I can remember apart from sitting outside as we were not allowed inside. My Gran would buy us a shandy with real ale in it then drink it for us as we didnt like the beer. She was a one. What with that and the snuff she used to give us. Makes me laugh so much

Would that be the Royal Park pub, just a hundred yards from the cinema ?? If so its student orientated these days, and your dear old Gran would not be impressed now

My new neighbour's noisier than his kids. The result being bedlam when they're "shouted" for at meal times.....

Where does the word SWANKY come from? My kids have never heard it before nor any of my friends. Must add I live in Dorset and a lot of words I grew up with in Leeds are not known down here.My mam would pronounce Swanky as Swonky...( I can hear her now, lol).
