I was a bus driver for very nearly 20 years and I used the same approach as yourself, no matter how miserable or rude the passenger was I always made a special point of saying please and thank you, sometimes the miserable ones would be shocked and return the compliment but mostly not. There was a driver out of Miggy who was always laughing and joking, Ken Ripley, a great guy no longer with us, but his favourite saying if a lady passenger was miserable was, "Cheer up Mrs, you might have got your dates mixed up".All the kids knew me as Billy No Brakes cos I used to give them a thrilling ride, not very pc I know, but nevertheless when doing the school runs they would shout "Go round again, we gonna go round again" everytime we approached a roundabout and invariably I would go round twice to much chearing and footstomping! John Peacock, who has been mentione on SL before, used to do the same and as we shared a flat at Cottingley we were in a bit of a competion as to who the kids liked most. When driving down the ring road between the golf course at Middleton I used to shout the famous fairground speedway ditty of "Hold on tight it's a really fast ride, the louder you scream the faster we go" this always got the kids screaming so I would knock the bus into neutral as it would go faster down the hill if you did, and by timing short turns on the wheel you could get the bus swaying from side to side. At the time I was quite ignorant of how dangerous i was being and with reflection should not have behaved in this way but the kids loved it, and me! however it all came to an end one day when, as I approached the roundabout at the top of Belle Isle road the little So and so's upstairs all got to the offside of the upper deck and as I entered the roundabout they all quickly shifted their weight to near side!!! resulting in the bus leaning to left almost on 2 wheels, scared the u no wot out of me, calmed down a bit after that.better stop reminiscing the wifes due home and I havent got the tea ready yet.oh happy times.
