I've gone up both ways, and still can't work out how it does it - nor can I, on leaving, be sure where I'm going to come out!

Then I presume we were eating Nash's fish and chips from the takeaway counter then ?

I don't see that they did.Nash's own website has this........It took 40 years and a third generation before the Nash's branched out however. First with another shop in Chapel Allerton, and then a fully-fledged restaurant in 1963, an impressive Tudor-style listed building that was once a private boys school. It was a bold move, but it became a roaring success. People flocked to enjoy tasty fish and chips served by the waitresses in their smart black and white outfits, and in such a grand setting. The website also gives their address as 17 Merrion Street. The Leodis picture is from 1943 and gives the Warwickshire Furnishing Company as being at 15, 17 & 19 Merrion Street. Nash's moved into 17 in 1963. I can remember getting fish and chips from the 'New Briggate' shop in 1968 when I first started to venture into the 'big city'. So...if we believe Leodis, Nash's moved into 17, Warwickshire's former home, which is the top building, the mock Tudor one. Which is what I'm trying to get at. No doubt they are currently in the lower down former private boys' school NOW, but with the quote from Leodis, plus their own website describing a 'Tudor style' building they moved into in 1963 - that's what makes me think they were originally in the top building on <street with no name>

One entrance to the restaurant on Merrion Street. One to the chip shop on what we will call New Briggate. For a couple of years or so in the 60s St John's House housed a small branch of Midland Bank in partial replacement for their former branch in New Briggate, which was demolished to make way for the Iner Ring Road

It shows the 'Nash's Fish & Chip Restaurant & Takeaway' place. I wonder why it states Chip not Chips? I think it means Fish and Chip Restarant and Takeaway - the "restaurant and takaway" bit is underneath in smaller letters. Makes more sense than "fish and chips restaurant and takeaway"...

The mock tudor building is the one they are in, it just so happens that the other one next to it is also a mock tudor building. As other have said, the Merrion Street entrance is just that, and entrance and you can see the setps go up from inside one of the shops fromting onto merrion street. All it is is a 6ft space with a staricase leading over the shops to the upstairs restaurant. The back is the takeaway entrance, but also does have access to the restaurant and the front (Merrion Street) is JUST restaurant access. If you cut away the building I think it would be like an inverted L shape - see attached, it's really poor as a drawing but shoudl give you an idea of a cross section......It seems in the case Leodis has it wrong on the website which is mnot uncommon given they have over 50,000 images on there. They cant all be right can they especially as some of the pghotos are years old!
